The following are excerpts from the speech
delivered by the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan at Mosque Maryam in
Chicago, Ill. on May 13, 2007, which is Part 5 of the One Nation Under
God Lecture Series.
In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful.
Babylon
rejected the warner that God had placed in her midst. So the
neighboring nations rose up against Babylon and Babylon was destroyed
and the neighboring nations that dealt with her felt the weight of her
fall, because her fall contributed to their fall, because Babylon was a
world power.
We are talking today on Part 5, One Nation Under God, the War of
Armageddon, Who Will Survive and How Strong is our Foundation? This is
a subject that every mother and father should be concerned with. Today,
our talk will be devoted to that which we depend on to buy goods and
services, which is called the U.S. Dollar. I recognize that we love the
dollar (“Benjamins”), so I happened to find a few and I brought them
out because we have become enslaved to the symbolic power of a dollar
that really is losing its value everyday.
We have deceived for this. We have tricked for this. We have lied
for this. We have killed for this. At the death of our loved ones, we
have fought over this and what this could buy of material things. I
want to talk about the dollar, but I want to start with something that
the Honorable Elijah Muhammad said since he’s my teacher, and the base
of what I’m going to say is in his book, “The Fall of America.”
On page 87, he talks about the “Decline of the dollar”. If it is the
Will of Allah (God), I hope to be able to show you why we can no longer
trust in this (dollar) as the God we trust.
We should learn, and quickly, who is the God that we should put our
trust in. Putting trust in this, (dollar) in a few days you are going
to see men with hundred dollar bills lighting their cigars because the
value of this dollar will be worthless.
The Honorable Elijah Muhammad writes, “The stronghold of the
American government is falling to pieces. She has lost her prestige
among the nations of the earth. One of the greatest powers of America
was”—past tense— “her dollar. The loss of such power will bring
any nation to weakness, for this is the media of exchange between
nations. The English pound and the American dollar have been the power
and beckoning light of these two great powers.”—America and the United Kingdom—“But when the world went off the gold and silver standard, the financial doom of England and America was sealed.”
At the time of his writing, the British pound had already lost 50
percent of its value. The American dollar has lost everything now as
backing for her currency, which once was backed by gold. For every $5
note and up, you could take this paper and go to a bank and get $5 in
gold; and from the $1 note up, you could go to the bank and get silver.
Now, you can’t get gold, you can’t get silver. When this falls, you
can’t get anything for the dollars that you fight over, that you hoard,
that we amass. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad writes, “The note
today is something that the Government declares they will give you the
value in return, but does not name what that value is.” Then he writes, “This is the number one fall.” Therefore, the fall of the dollar is the number one fall, and when it falls, everything else will come down after it.
The Honorable Elijah Muhammad doesn’t go on to prophesy what will happen if there’s 100 percent inflation. He said, “Your guess is as good as mine.”
What should we expect, he said, even in the next 12 months? Well, I
think there’s enough information today that we might be able to safely
predict what we’re going to face in the next 12 months, in the next 24
months, in the next three years, in the next five years. We don’t have
a lot of time.
All of us that are Christians, and I say this to my Muslim family,
this is a Christian country. No matter how much we love the Holy Qur’an
and the beauty of the Holy Qur’an, you cannot converse with the people
of America unless you develop a good understanding of that which they
believe in. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is our example. He could talk to
Christians, to Jews, to Zoroastrians, it didn’t make any difference
what their religion was, he knew something about what they believed. He
could teach them out of their books, then bring them to the book that
Allah (God) was revealing to him.
Having said that, we shall open to the Book of Revelations. We shall
start with the 17th Chapter because it’s very important that we
understand what John, the Revelator was seeing of the time, because
it’s clear that we are living in the end times. Every sign that you
could think of that the Bible and the Prophets foretold, you can see it
already manifesting. We are living at the end of this system of things.
John, the Revelator says, “An angel came and he carried me away in
the spirit, into the wilderness.” This word “wilderness,” is an
important word. What wilderness? A wilderness is a place that’s
uncultivated, undeveloped and here John is carried into the wilderness.
I’m going to make it a little plainer as time goes on by the guidance
of Allah (God) and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. “And I saw a
woman sitting upon a scarlet colored beast, full of the names of
blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns; The woman was arrayed in
purple and scarlet color, decked with gold and precious stones and she
had a golden cup in her hand that was full of abominations and
filthiness of her fornication.” Now, that’s a heck of a
description. A man carried out in the wilderness. He sees a woman
decked in all this finery, sitting on a beast. Well, what kind of a
place is that for a dignified woman, sitting on a beast? And the woman
had gold and precious stones and pearls. I mean she had money, and more
than money she had material substance. But the woman was holding a cup
in her hand that was gold, but in it was abomination and the filthiness
of her fornication.
“And upon her head was a name written, Mystery Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth.” This woman was so unclean that she was called, “the mother of harlots.”
She was not only the mother of these kinds of women (harlots), she
was the mother of the abominations that were practiced throughout the
earth. John the Revelator continues, “And I saw that woman drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.” She was wicked. Then the scripture said that she had seven heads and ten horns.
John, the Revelator said, “I’m going to tell you the mystery of the beast that carried her which had seven heads and ten horns.” John,
the Revelator said it meant seven mountains and the ten horns, which
thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore and make her
desolate, naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire.
And then another angel came and he cried mightily with a strong voice saying, “Babylon,
the Great is Fallen and is become the habitation of devils; and the
hold of every foul spirit and a cage for every unclean and hateful
bird.” John says; “for all nations have drunk of the wine of the
wrath of her fornication. And the kings of the earth have committed
fornication with her and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich
through the abundance of her delicacies.”
Let’s look at a few definitions here. This Babylon was called
Mystery Babylon. “Mystery.” We know the history of ancient Babylon,
that’s not a mystery. This one is a Mystery Babylon. According to the
dictionary, mystery is “something not fully understood.” It’s “a
religious truth, comprehensible only by divine revelation.” The Old
Testament says that Babylon could have been healed. No matter how bad
Babylon was, Babylon could have been healed, but she was not. Her
rulers were so arrogant in ancient Babylon. They had the people of God
in their midst. They had defiled the people of God and they did not
want to release them so that God could use them. So that started a
fight with God. Ancient Babylon was so blind by her own sense of power,
that she refused to consult history that would have taught her that no
enemy has ever won a fight against God.
Babylon rejected the warner that God had placed in her midst. So the
neighboring nations rose up against Babylon and Babylon was destroyed
and the neighboring nations that dealt with her felt the weight of her
fall, because her fall contributed to their fall, because Babylon was a
world power.
Now, we’re not talking about ancient Babylon. We’re referring today
to the Mystery Babylon that is found in the book of Revelations that
gives us a hint of the end times. This Mystery Babylon was holding a
golden cup. It was gold on the outside. She represented this mother of
harlots. The gold cup represented something so precious, so
foundational to success as gold on the outside. Purified material that
was formed into a cup that beckoned the world to such a beautiful
exterior, but inside she was filled with abominations and filth of
every kind. The standard that Babylon represented was freedom, justice,
equity, the rule of the masses. She represented material strength,
where one’s needs could be fulfilled and all within her society could
be whatever they determined they wanted to be.
She was a golden chalice/cup on the outside, but unfortunately, the
scripture teaches that she was filled with filth and abomination of
every kind on the inside. When our behavior is abominable, it means our
conduct is so bad that it incites the loathing and hatred of God for
that conduct. So, the woman had incurred God’s wrath. Allah’s (God’s)
first effort is to warn that we have incurred his displeasure which
would soon bring about his wrath.
Mercy and grace takes precedence over punishment. He always raises a
warner to warn us that we are in a dangerous condition or position; but
in that warner is a healing for that society and a healing for the
people if the people would heed the warning. So, ancient Babylon could
have been healed but she was not. The scripture says, “Babylon, the
Great, is fallen.” The scripture didn’t say, Babylon, the Great, will
fall. Babylon, the Great, has fallen. It says, “Babylon, the Great, is
fallen.” “Is” represents a state of being, but it’s present tense. It
means that the process of the fall has already begun. It means that the
very thing that any great nation is afraid of, has already happened and
all we’re waiting for is the ultimate crash of what has started the
fall, because gravity does not permit you to check your fall.
Why is Babylon falling? She has become the habitation of devils.
Habitation means the act of inhabiting or the state of being inhabited,
a natural environment, or locality, a place of abode or residence, a
native habitat. The environment of Babylon is so loathsome, so putrid,
so filthy, that it is a natural environment for devils. It says it’s
the hole of every foul spirit. A hole is a deep, dark crevice that an
animal burrows in and finds a hole.
This Babylon is a deep, dark hole and it contains every foul spirit
and it is a cage, a home, for every unclean and hateful bird. In “The
Fall of America,” by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, he talks about
certain birds. Now, the Bible and Holy Qur’an use birds, beasts and
fish to describe the characteristics of human beings. You have an owl.
You have a crow. You have a buzzard. You have a raven. These are the
things that eat on the flesh of others. Now, this place is a place for
every unclean and hateful bird. I don’t want to keep you in suspense,
but this Mystery Babylon, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad teaches us is
the United States of America. Her influence is all over the world and
she has spread her filth and abomination in every nation of the earth
and all the nations have drunk of the wine of committing fornication
with America.
Yes, it is true and it’s unfortunate that it is true that America’s
environment is so foul that it has become the natural place of anybody
who wants to rebel against submission to the Will of God.

n The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful.
Do you think the prophets saw
the trans-Atlantic slave trade? Do you think the prophets of God saw
the 400 years of slavery that historians say is the worst and most
cruel slavery ever put on a human being in the annals of history? Do
you think the prophets saw our slavery?
The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan
We would have to conclude that, if they wrote of the end of time, they
had to see the horror of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and they must
have written about it somewhere in the Holy Writ. They must have seen
the sons and daughters of Africa ripped away from her shores. They must
have seen Africa brought to ruin and the condition that Africa is in
today, in spite of the fact that Africa is the birthplace of
civilization. Did the prophets see it? I believe they saw it. I believe
they wrote about it.
Have you ever listened to televised religious
programs by various scholars and teachers of religion? Have you ever
heard any scholar of Christianity, Judaism or Islam talk about the
trans-Atlantic slave trade and the suffering of Black people in
America? If we have never heard any scholar talk about it, then
shouldn’t we ask why? If it was that horrible, why didn’t Jewish
scholars talk about it? Why didn’t Christian scholars talk about it?
Why didn’t Muslim scholars talk about it?
Is it that we do not exist in their hearts and
minds? Or do they think that other nations whose condition is not as
serious as ours can receive warning and guidance from Allah (God), but
we, the Blacks in the Diaspora and Africa, have no place in the heart
of God?
When you look at the condition of Black people
in America, the Caribbean, Brazil, Central and South America, Africa,
and the Isles of the Pacific, have you ever asked yourself, “Does God
grieve for us?”
Who needs a God that does not think about us?
Who needs a God that does not care for the suffering of an entire
people? Although scholars of religion may not have considered Black
people at all, we have joined churches, mosques and synagogues.
Although Black people have become members of the Communist and
Socialist Parties, they have not talked about our condition nor do they
have the power to heal it, and oftentimes they do not care.
I want Jews, Christians and Muslims to think
over my words. I want the world to know that Farrakhan is not now nor
have I ever been a hater of the Jewish people. I say that without a
tongue in cheek, because I am unafraid of what the enemy can do to me.
The enemy can only do to me what my God allows, and whatever He allows,
I’m prepared to receive it, by His Grace.
I am a Muslim and I love the Muslim world, but
I must ask some hard questions today. I grew up in the church, so I
love Jesus. Not only do I love him, but I believe that I am walking in
his footsteps. We know that the horror of the trans-Atlantic slave
trade and our sojourn in slavery are written of in scripture, but
where? How was it written and what should we expect from the knowledge
of what is written? I want every person, Black or White, rich or poor,
wise or foolish, government or non-government, receiving this message
to know that I am not filled with hatred or bitterness, because our
suffering that is undeserved is redemptive.
We must deal with our suffering, so I want you
to follow my words, because God has given all of us the power to
reason. I do not want to be emotional; I want to be very rational. I am
deeply concerned because what’s in my heart, I must say it today. If I
never live another moment, I have to say it today.
I am taking the time to set a framework for
discussion because many people who are Nationalist, Communist or
Socialist do not have any respect for the Bible or Qur’an. While that’s
understandable because of the negative way those religious books have
been used, I want to set this lecture on “Reparations: What does
America and Europe owe and what does Allah (God) promise?” in a
spiritual context, because reparations is a political term, but justice
is spiritual and political.
In order to gain reparations, one must appeal
to a government that may or may not listen. But the Honorable Elijah
Muhammad taught us that, when we lie down, justice lies down with us,
and when we get up, justice gets up with us. Justice is not concerned
with the World Court or the International Criminal Court or the local
judge or the local court.
The justice with which God has set the balance
in the universe caused Jesus to say: “He who lives by the sword will
die by the sword.” “He who has led into captivity will go into
captivity.” “A man shall reap what he sows.” The Prophet Obadiah says,
“As thou has done, so shall it be done unto you.” These laws of justice
have nothing to do with man’s courts; they have everything to do with
the highest Court, the Universal Court of the Divine Supreme Being.
I would like to set the framework for repair.
Both the Bible and the Qur’an begin with the story of the creation of a
human being made in the image and the likeness of God. That is very
significant from a Biblical standpoint because, if you and I,
regardless of color, race or ethnic roots, are made in the image and
the likeness of God, then all of us are born with the potential to rise
above any reality to create a new one. The potential is within you.
The Qur’an says it differently. The Qur’an
says that Allah (God) made the human being to be caliphate, God’s
vicegerent or the successor of God, who rules God’s creation in His
Name by His Permission. That’s as high as you can get, but the Qur’an
and the Bible say Satan caused Adam’s foot to slip and he fell from his
lofty position. The Qur’an bears witness to Adam’s fall in the same
language. In fact, the Qur’an is a verifier of the Truth of the Torah
and the Gospel. That’s why every one of you should have a Qur’an and
you should read it because it verifies exactly what God revealed
through the mouths of His prophets in the Bible.
This Adam that slipped had a wife, Eve, and
they had children. Because they fell, they produced the first
dysfunctional family. They had two children, Cain and Abel, but envy
was between the two children. If I am a creature created in the image
of God to be God’s caliphate, my destiny is to rule God’s creation in
His stead. Satan caused Adam’s foot to slip and he fell from his
original position and condition. So, you cannot repair the human being
that has fallen unless you restore him to his original condition.
It is similar to when we take our cars to
mechanic shops, the assessor tells us what damage has been done. If
after we pay the mechanic his fee and drive off and the car stops down
the block, either the assessor was a crook or he was a bad mechanic,
because what we wanted was our car brought back to its original
condition.
Through envy, hatred and murder, two brothers
grew up. According to the Qur’an and the Bible, from one man, God made
humanity into tribes and families, but those tribes and families show
the same characteristics of Cain and Abel. When Cain was about to kill
his brother, God asked him: “Why are you angry? Why has your
countenance fallen?” Sin lies at the door, with anger. Cain was angry,
because he felt God favored his brother. That anger and envy produced
hatred. Hatred produced murder and Cain slew his brother. From that day
to the present, murder, hatred, envy, revolution, war and anger can be
found completely throughout the human family, all because of our fall
from our original position. So, the entire human family is in need of
repair, but there’s a segment of that family that has fallen even
further than all of the rest. That is why I have taken this subject:
What does America and Europe owe and what does Allah (God) promise?
In my brother, Randall Robinson’s book,
entitled, “The Debt,” he said that unless White people are willing to
look at slavery and the impact that slavery has on Black people’s
present mental, moral, spiritual, social and economic condition, we
will never heal the racial divide in this country.
This is why I was begging Allah (God) to
please guide my words during this message because it is not my
intention to make Black people sad over slavery or make White people
mad over slavery. However, some White people do not know what happened
to Black people in slavery, or why they are in the privileged position
that they are in today based on what happened to us—this is what I am
hoping that Black and White will consider. For if America is unwilling
to look at the horror of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and what
happened to us as a people, there will never be a chance for good
relations between Black and White people.
The current relationship is not a good
one—it’s a “go along to get along” relationship. I do not want to get
along if I just have to go along with the terrible treatment that’s
being handed to me and our people in American life. I will never
encourage Black people to submit to the madness of this society in
order to have a White man smile and pat us on the back and treat us
like dogs that they have called out of the backyard. I do not mind a
smile. I do not mind a pat on the back, but what I want is for America
to consider what was done to Black people in slavery.
I know the present generation of White people
had nothing to do with what happened to us. Therefore, their argument
is: “We didn’t do it. I don’t know what y’all crying about. I ain’t
never lynched no Niggra, I mean Negro, I mean colored person, I mean
African American. I have never lynched any of you people. So why don’t
y’all stop whining. If you don’t like America, then leave it. Go back
to Africa where you belong.”
If the government of the United States first,
Congress, the Supreme Court, state legislatures and governors, are
willing to look at the problem, they will discover something that will
give them a different thought about what is justice and why Black
people continue to cry out for justice. If they look at it and gain the
true knowledge of what happened to us, yet Black people don’t know
either, then we may continue to walk around laughing, joking, playing,
dancing, popping our fingers and shaking our backsides. We don’t know
what happened to us, but anybody that tries to teach us, they call them
a hate teacher.
But there’s not a Jewish person in America who
is unaware of the Jewish Holocaust. You can’t turn on your radio or
your television without somebody telling you about the horror of what
happened in Nazi Germany to Jewish people. The Jewish people are taught
to remember so that they can stand up and say, “Never, never, ever
again.” I want Black people to become so filled with the knowledge of
what happened to us and our rich, historic past that we will rise as a
people and say with meaning, “Never, ever, ever again.

In
order to be successful in establishing
truth, we have to be imbued with the spirit of Allah (God). Otherwise,
the persecution that follows revelation will prove to be too much and
we will give up the truth to seek some comfort from those who would
persecute us for the sake of truth. There is no such thing as
revelation coming to a people and that revelation is not followed by
persecution, insult, injury, torture and even prison or death, but,
those who really believe in the Message and the Messenger are imbued
with a kind of spirit that no matter what persecution they receive on
account of the Word, they become stronger rather than weaker; they
become bolder rather than more reticent; they have the spirit of a
warrior; they want to fight for the truth and fight for the
establishment of a truth that would set their people free. This is why
the scripture says, “Many are called but only a few are chosen.” Many
will know it is the truth and love it, but, they will not have the
strength to stand up for it under persecution or even unto death.
This particular prophecy in Isaiah is a forecast of The One that would come at the end of the world of Satan. Isaiah says, “The spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord hath anointed me to preach glad tidings unto the meek.”
This scripture is talking about the Black man and woman of America who
are meek in terms of how we face the onslaught of our enemies in terms
of our inability to cast off the yoke of our oppressor. The glad
tidings to the meek is that the end of your oppression has arrived and
the end of your oppressor has arrived, and, the most beautiful part of
this is that the God Who is prophesied to come has come and is present
and chooses a foolish people. Well, that is us. I am not trying to put
us down, but, we are definitely rather foolish. It is not your fault we
were made foolish by our enemies, but, the Book says that He would
choose a people who were once a great people but are no people at all
now. He says, “Thou shalt no more be the tail. Thou shalt be the head.”
As a Black person, Negro, Colored or African American,
whatever you want to call yourself, you have such a poor view of
yourself though you pray more than others, you go to church more than
others, you shout more than others, you believe more deeply than
others. Yet, you do not believe that Allah (God) would come to you,
that He would choose you to bring a revelation that He has kept from
the wise and the prudent men and the rulers of this world. Since you
think like that, it is very difficult for you to see your value in this
time.
No people in history have ever undergone what we have undergone. We
have shown a tremendous ability to bounce back from the worst form of
slavery and oppression. This tells us, as the Bible teaches, that you
were not chosen for your righteousness. We are of the righteous but we
are not acting that way. The scripture says that you were chosen out of
the furnace of affliction because the furnace was designed for you to
purify you and me, and, to make us the standard by which value would be
measured. This is why the Bible says, “God’s coming would be as a refiner’s fire and like Fullers’ soap.” You
are considered to be like gold that you find in the depth of the earth,
but, gold has to be purified of the dross that is on it so it can shine
and become a standard of value.
When Allah (God) chose the Arabs, He chose a people that were
nothing. They were ignorant, divided and steeped in filth, yet, they
were the choice of Allah (God) to raise Prophet Muhammad [PBUH] from
among them and give them the greatest revelation that had been in the
world up to that time— the Qur’an. After this Book was
revealed, Islam captured the known world, then, the west was discovered
by the Europeans and Europeans have built a world now that has
literally overtaken the world of Islam. Yet, Allah (God) says in the
Qur’an that, “He sent His Messenger with the guidance and the true religion that He may make it overcome the religions—all of them.”
Islam has been overcome by the powers of the western world. Why is
that? It is because the Book (Qur’an) is here, the revelation is here,
but, the real essence of the meaning of the Book is yet to come. The
Book is designed to destroy Satan’s world. The Book is designed to
prepare the believers in this Book for the Hereafter, which the
Honorable Elijah Muhammad said means “Here on this earth after the destruction of the power of the wicked to rule.” A whole New World will come to the earth.
The most powerful country on earth is the United States of America.
It would be foolish for us to think that the prophets could see into
the future and not see America in their prophetic utterances. It is a
nation in which is another nation, an entire people swallowed up by
another people and are oppressed by that powerful people, and, that
people refuse to let you go or give you justice.
You have had to fight, bleed and die just to go to the toilet with
White people, to eat at a lunch counter with White people, to sleep in
a hotel or motel with White people. You have had to die to have the
right to enter a boardroom of Corporate America and you still do not
have what you need to be free. You refuse to believe that the rulers of
America are your open enemies. This is because you do not know what an
enemy is.
Everything in nature has a natural enemy. An enemy is one who would
deprive you of life, freedom, justice, equality, the pursuit of
happiness, knowledge, wisdom, understanding, love, peace, brotherhood
and unity. Who is the natural enemy of Allah (God) and the natural
enemy of the Black man?
I have dogs at our farm and I have cats. At first they were natural
enemies and would fight each other, but, since some of them grew
together, the cat can lie down with the dog, but, I have other dogs
that have never had that experience, and, if I let those dogs out of
the kennel, they would kill every cat in sight; they would kill the
sheep. So, enemies can grow together, and, when they get use to each
other they forget that they are enemies, but, I watch when it is time
to eat and the dog that appeared to be a friend of the cat will fight
the cat. The dog gets confused sometimes, and, I see him going around
the female cat.
He can’t do anything, but, the tomcat does not like that. It seems
like they get a little upset, and, the nature comes out in them because
they are natural enemies. It should be easy for you to understand that
you have had an enemy in order for you to be deprived of what it takes
to have happiness, freedom, justice, equality, knowledge, wisdom,
understanding, love, peace, happiness and unity. The minute we try to
unite, there is always somebody from the outside that feels threatened
by our unity; they break it up.
Your enemy never wants to see you independent of him. He must
always be the master and you must always be the servant. And when you
try to escape being a servant he finds devious ways to get you back
under his wings. He makes you an offer that you cannot refuse—an offer
in money backed by guns and gangsters. You do not have an army and the
lure of money gets you. So, Beatrice Foods is now back in the hands of
Caucasians. Motown is owned by Caucasians. Ultra Sheen is owned by
Caucasians. BET (Black Entertainment Television) has been taken over by
Caucasians. Russell Simmons struggled with Def Jam records, Def Jam
Comedy, and they gave him an offer. Now he works for them.
Mr. Bob Johnson, the former owner of BET, now works for Viacom. He
received more than a billion dollars, but, what is the dollar? It is a
piece of paper with a White man’s face on it and the value of that
paper is going down every day that we live so what you have is nothing.
They call it a partnership, but, all the while they are trying to find
a way to take it from you. Why? Because independence is too much for
you. You will begin to think that you are equal to them and you must
never think that. In their mind, you, your children, your grandchildren
and your great grandchildren must always be servants to your former
slave masters and their children.
You may say, “Well, we are the enemies of ourselves.”
Allah (God) did not make you that way. White people made you that way.
Allah (God) made a man in His own image and after His own likeness,
and, unless you are what Allah (God) made you, you are exactly what the
White man made you, and, he made you a BLEEP, a coon, a shine, a ham
bone, a colored boy, a worthless nothing. The sad thing is, that is the
way we think about ourselves. That is why it is so easy for you as a
brother to shoot down your own brother, because you do not see him as
your brother. If he doesn’t wear the same color, if he doesn’t have the
same sign, if he doesn’t live in the same neighborhood, then, he is
something different from you. That is ignorance, and, that ignorance
allows the enemy to feed you guns, feed you drugs, and make you the
number one killer of yourself and your people.
You have got an enemy, brother, but, I want to acquaint you with your friend.
Thank you.

n The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful.
Unfortunately, the truth of the real condition of
America is kept hidden from the people until conditions become so
intolerable that the most uninformed of the people readily sees that
something is wrong. Then, scapegoating becomes a necessary tool used by
wickedly wise policy-makers and business leadership to re-direct and
focus attention away from their own misdeeds and onto someone who is
defenseless in the society.
A scapegoat is a person, group or thing upon whom the
blame for the mistakes or crimes of others is thrust. According to the
Bible, in the Book of Leviticus, the word scapegoat comes from the use
of a goat, over whose head the high priest of the ancient Jews
confessed the sins of the people on the Day of Atonement, after which
the goat was allowed to escape. (Leviticus 16:8, 10, 26, 30)
The Honorable Elijah Muhammad taught us that when the
door to the raw materials of Asia, Africa and Latin America closes to
imperialistic design, the standard of living in America will decline.
Those doors are now closing, and the American people are beginning to
suffer as a result.
Asia, Africa and Latin America have been the playground
for America’s economic and leisure purposes. Now that America’s ability
to extract raw materials from these countries and compete against their
products in the global economy has declined, America’s standard of
living is on the decline. No relief is in sight for America’s annual
trade deficit of over $100 billion. Labor and other operational costs
here make
If
the American people truly knew their condition and trusted their
leadership, they would be willing to take the proper medicine—no matter
how bad it would taste—if that medicine would correct the condition.
The political leadership has lied about the condition of the country.
Some have said that the economy is on the upswing, while we are living
in a decline.
American products more expensive to sell abroad and in many cases even more expensive to sell right at home.
As a result, America buys more from foreign countries,
particularly Japan and eastern Europe, than she sells to foreign
countries. The door to the world is closing and America is not
competing well in the global economy. Thus the American standard of
living is going down.
Black people are being positioned by the wickedly wise
as the cause of the country’s ruin. The scapegoating of the poor sets
the climate in America against the American labor class, against the
underprivileged, and against Black people. There is now a pervasive
anti-Black attitude. The media feeds this plan of scapegoating Black
people by portraying us a useless and criminal.
Instead of looking honestly at the problem and coming
up with solutions that would give America a future, the leadership lies
to the American people and scapegoats the poor and the defenseless for
the misdeeds of the American government.
If the American people truly knew their condition and
trusted their leadership, they would be willing to take the proper
medicine—no matter how bad it would taste—if that medicine would
correct the condition. The political leadership has lied about the
condition of the country. Some have said that the economy is on the
upswing, while we are living in a decline.
If a doctor said you were fine while you were severely
ill, and that doctor would not prescribe the proper medicine for your
illness, that doctor could be charged and maybe found guilty of
malpractice. Well, what about politicians and their unwillingness to
prescribe real solutions to the country’s problems?
How did America in the past 12 years go from a leading
creditor nation to the leading debtor nation? Where was the money
borrowed from and to whom is the money owed?
The American taxpayer is now a slave to servicing a
skyrocketing debt; a debt that is so large that it sentences future
generations to the same servitude to this debt because the politicians
are not courageous enough to deal honestly with this problem and
present the American people with a real solution.
It’s dangerous to enslave a people and be the perpetual
source of opposition to truth, which is the means for freeing the
people from ignorance, yet say you believe in God. God has always come
to the aid of the oppressed and the enslaved fighting against the rich
and the powerful when they deprive others of the basic essentials of
life, which are freedom, justice and equality that which is said to
constitute the base of this country.
When the slaves were enamored with the riches of
Pharaoh, Moses was not able to get his people to listen until he prayed
for God’s hand to be set against the wealth of Egypt. (Holy Qur’an,
Surah 10, Section 9) The more Egypt declined, the more the slaves were
inclined to listen to Moses and get up and go for self.
God has always chosen from among the despised and
rejected. Whenever there has been a master and a slave, God has always
put the solution in the head of slaves. But if America has no respect
for human life, or for those who are its former slaves, then America
will miss the solution to its problems.
In the Book of Esther in the Bible, there is a prince,
Haman, who had prepared a plot to destroy the Jewish people in what was
known at that time as the land of Persia. Haman harbored animosity
toward the Jews because they did not look upon him with reverence. As a
result of his animosity, Haman began to spread rumors about the Jews
and misrepresented them as lawless and disrespectful of the king. He
proposed to the king that the Jews were worthy of death, “…all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day…and to take the spoil of them for a prey,” because of their so-called disrespect for the king’s law. (Esther 3:13)
The King, Ahasuerus, who had exalted Haman above all
other princes, was therefore receptive to Haman’s unjust plot to
destroy the Jews. A decree was issued and all Jews were sentenced to
death.
However, Queen Esther uncovered the plot. Risking her
own life, she approached the king to petition on behalf of the Jews. In
this instance, the king was not a sexist. Though the voice on behalf of
the Jews was a woman, he listened to her petition, weighed the evidence
and determined to spare the Jews. Because the king heeded Queen
Esther’s warning, he ceased the plot that would have caused unjust
death to be visited upon the Jewish people, thereby sparing himself and
his country from the wrath of God. If he had been inclined toward
sexism, he would have rejected her warning, and he would have sentenced
himself and his people to the chastisement of God.
Sexism is sinking the country. Classism is sinking the
country. Racism is sinking the country. White supremacy is sinking the
country. Black inferiority and a slave mentality are sinking the
country.
We must be open to truth, no matter from whom it is
spoken, because the ultimate source of all truth is Allah (God). The
Honorable Elijah Muhammad taught about those of us who are used to
eating from a gold bowl, that if truth doesn’t come to you in a gold
bowl, but rather in an old pot, and you refuse it because it’s not in
your customary vessel, then your arrogance and foolishness will deprive
you of the light that can free you of your condition, and you will
ultimately be led to your destruction by your own arrogance.
God has chosen from among the former slaves, the
Blacks. He has put in the head of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and in
the heads of us who follow him, a light; a torchlight that shows the
way out of America’s worsening conditions, for Blacks and for all of
America. But America’s treatment of us and America’s treatment of the
Honorable Elijah Muhammad is like the treatment of Daniel by the proud
kings of Babylon. It’s terrible that some of those with power and
influence label me a “Hitler,” a racist or a hater, so that they can
justify their own people, or agents among our people, in attempts to
defame and otherwise harm me. This is hiding the light. This is
scapegoating.
***
The reason leaders desire to hide the truth is to keep
the people blind and powerless so that the rich can engage unhindered
in feeding their own greed. They don’t desire to live in a free
society, a just society, and an equal society for all of the country’s
people. They are rebels against God. As Jesus said, “Ye are of your
father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a
murderer in the beginning, and abode not in the truth…” (John 8:44)
Any man who will not speak or abide in the truth is a
murderer of the human spirit and the law of liberty, for only truth
gives us true liberty. This is why it is written that “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”
(Matthew 19:24) The rich are unwilling to really sacrifice to lift the
poor because of their basic greed and immorality. Therefore, the rich
today are in trouble. Speaking of the rich, in the Book of James
(5:1-6) it reads:
“Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your
miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your
garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust
of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it
were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold,
the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields , which is
of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have
reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. Ye have lived
in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your
hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the
just; and he doth not resist you.”
As it was in the days of Jesus, so it is today. The
rich have been found wanton and wanting, and God’s judgment is upon
them in America.

Faith
A nation is no greater than its service to the
weak and the poor and the disadvantaged of that nation. If we believe
in the scriptures, particularly of the Bible and the New Testament,
Jesus lays out a yardstick that will be the determining criterion of
the Judgment of God of a nation in the last days. Certainly in a
country that professes to be a Christian country based on a
Judeo-Christian ethic, this criterion should be held high as the
measuring stick to help us to see how far off the country is and what
danger the country is in by measuring its distance from the criterion.
What is the criterion laid down by the Master, Himself, who will be
judging? One of the disciples asked the Master (Jesus), when he gave
them the criterion that they should minister unto the sick, the
imprisoned, and those out of doors: “When were you sick and imprisoned
and we ministered not unto you? When were you homeless or out of doors
and we gave you not shelter? Master, when were you without and we did
not for you?” And the Master said, “In as much as you have not done
this to the least of these, my brethren, you have not done it also unto
me.” The Master laid down the criterion.
In America, we have millions today who are homeless. We have many
more millions who are sick, imprisoned, impoverished and weak, and it
appears as though the conservative element of the country is moving
away from care for the poor, the weak, the helpless, and the children
and catering to the desires of those that have. But it is the poor and
the weak who built the country. It is the poor and the weak who have
fought, bled and died to maintain America as a great nation. Now
America is turning her back on the weak and blaming the condition of
the country on the poor, on the Black, on the Hispanic. In reality, the
mismanagement of the wealth and people of this country is the fault of
those who are at the top who have held power, who have manipulated the
masses of the people against the good of America and the good of the
world.
How will America answer to Christ, with human beings sleeping under
bridges and America is spending over half a trillion dollars to bail
out the savings and loan industry, but won’t spend money to bail out
those veterans who fought, bled and died, who are sleeping under
bridges, who have fallen on hard times, whose homes and cars have been
repossessed?
What is America coming to? The cities are filled with crime and
violence. People can’t walk the streets in safety. The elderly of the
nation are preyed upon by wicked, unscrupulous people who sometimes rob
them of their life savings and of their little social security checks.
The babies of the nation are abused, murdered, drowned in hot water,
even put in ovens by their parents. The stress of life in America is
such that some parents can’t handle the crying of children. So babies
are coming to hospitals dying of trauma, shock, their heads bashed,
thrown against the wall, thrown out of windows by parents who have had
enough. Young girls in a sex-mad society are having their sexual nature
titillated by sick television programs, sick movies, sick video tapes,
sick songs from a sick, decadent culture that is using the talent of
gifted people to spread degenerate life in the name of music and art.
Babies are having their sexual nature titillated. Mothers are not home
because they have to work. Daughters are left to be savaged by brutal
men, sometimes their own fathers and uncles, cousins and brothers. And
we ask, “What is the world coming to?”
America the beautiful is becoming America the ugly. They say love
her or leave her. We have no place to go. Some of us will say we will
run to Africa. But Africa is suffering, too. We say we will run to
Europe. Be careful. We say we will run to South America or to Mexico.
There is no hiding place today. The Judgment of God has touched every
nation in every corner of the globe.
This is a beautiful country, but the human beings within it are
being turned into something that God Himself is angry at and sick of.
To make God angry is to incur His wrath. John the Revelator said, “And
the nations were angry and Thy wrath is come. It is the time of the
dead that they should be judged and given justice.” Everywhere you look
people are angry. You get on the subway and look in their faces, you
don’t see peace. You drive your car, you can hardly find humanitarian
gestures. People will kill you over a parking space; kill you over a
place in line in the bank or in the supermarket. Arguments are breaking
out in the home and now the schools are battlegrounds. There is no
peace anywhere to be found.
Not only are the nations angry, but God is angry. He is angry at
what He is looking at—debauchery and filth paraded as morality—and if
you speak against it, you are considered something ugly. If a pastor
speaks against homosexuality, he is called homophobic. If he speaks
against lesbianism, he is not up to speed. He is living in old times.
If we take a moral stand against adultery and fornication, we are out
of touch with reality. If we criticize our government for its
corruption, we are called un-American. If we criticize the behavior of
White people in their injustice toward Blacks, and if we as Black
people want to come together and find some solace and peace among
ourselves, we are called racists in reverse.
So we better not even speak the truth because if you speak the
truth, somebody is going to get hurt. But truth is your best friend,
because truth will give us a mirror to allow us to see ourselves and
how far off we are from the standard of God. Somebody has to tell the
truth. Somebody has to be willing to pay the price of the truth. Truth
is more important than our little positions. Truth is more important
than being a mayor or a police chief or a senator or a cardinal or a
pope or an imam or the President of the United States. Truth is bigger
than us all.
The Holy Qur’an teaches us that Allah created the heavens and the
earth with truth. This universe is sustained with truth. There is no
position of power that can be sustained over any long period of time
based on falsehood and injustice. What did we see in Oklahoma? What was
it that had us mesmerized? It’s a wake up call. White folks have always
thought it was Black people they had to watch out for. White folks have
always feared Black unity as though our unity would mean that we would
do to them what they and their fathers have done and continue to do to
us. How much they misread Black people. They don’t mind us having guns,
as long as we shoot one another. But they only give you enough to get
you in trouble with yourself.
I have warned, by the Grace of God, in the past that trouble would
not come from us, but America’s trouble would come from her own
dissatisfied White people of this nation who are fed up with the
government and the government’s misrepresentation of the Constitution
and of what the founding fathers of this nation set in motion.
Terrorism is an act of desperation of men and women who refuse to
believe that any avenue for the redress of their grievance will be
listened to. Consequently, they feel they must take the matter of
justice into their own hands. When a people are deprived of justice,
their minds become imbalanced. That’s why justice is represented by a
female holding a scale with a blindfold over her eyes, that she is not
to see who you are, your station in life, what your color, culture, or
national origin is, how much money you have or don’t have, how much
education you have or don’t have. Justice should be blind to adjust the
scale; the weight of facts in one hand and the weight of action in
accord with facts on the other, giving balance. And when you live in a
world whose very root is unjust, it is only a matter of time before the
injustice carried on by those in high places reaches down to infants,
and the scale becomes so imbalanced that the people lose the ability to
see correctly, hear correctly, perceive correctly. That imbalance is
referred to as insanity. Sanity and sanitary deals with cleanliness,
and that which is unclean is unsanitary. Unsanitary leads to disease,
and disease, unsanitary, unclean is the same as insane.
Brother Farrakhan, are you saying that every insane person is
unclean? Every person that is insane is possessed of an unclean spirit.
And when your mind is imbalanced, you do things that are unclean. You
will defecate on yourself. You will urinate on yourself. You will do
unsocial things, unclean things. You don’t think you are doing anything
wrong because in your own mind you are all right, because you have lost
the standard by which decency and sanity and cleanliness is measured. A
Muslim could not be a terrorist because no Muslim is so hopeless that
he denies Allah’s sufficiency that he has to kill and maim and
brutalize innocent people to make a sad, silly point.
In the Bible, God says, “I will give you your own blood to drink and
you will be drunk with your own blood as with sweet wine.” America is
becoming a boiling cauldron of gross dissatisfaction. The Honorable
Elijah Muhammad said 30 percent dissatisfaction could lead to a change
that affects 75 percent of the world. But when you get 100 percent
dissatisfaction, it leads to a total change. What you have all over the
earth is total dissatisfaction and this is why Jesus said there would
be wars and rumors of wars and kingdom would rise against kingdom, and
nation against nation. And this is just the beginning of sorrow. There
would be famine, pestilence and earthquakes in diverse places. Is not
that what you are seeing?
The Honorable Elijah Muhammad said to me that Justice is a Law that
distinguishes between right and wrong. It goes to sleep with you. It
wakes up with you. Whether you are knowledgeable of that Law or not, it
is alive and working either with you, for you or against you,
regardless to what the courts do. The Law of Justice, the balance that
God set up in the universe, you can’t escape it. The fool thinks in his
heart, “I have gotten away with my evil.” What a fool you are indeed.
God says in the Bible: “Whatsoever is done in the dark, I am going to
bring it forth into the light.” The Holy Qur’an says: “Though it be the
weight of an atom, hidden in a rock and the rock buried in the earth,”
He said, “Yet will I bring it forth.”
The Bible teaches, “Prepare slaughter for the children for the
iniquities of their fathers.” You think you are getting away? My silly
little brother, you reefer smoking, coke using, crack sniffing, liquor
drinking, freakish acting brother, you think you are getting away
because there are no police around? The police are there. Not the city
police, but the police of the Law of God. You use crack and the crack
affects your brain, but not just your brain. It affects the head of the
sperm, and it affects the egg. You are passing on your sin to your
unborn generation. You are passing on your filth and your degeneracy to
your babies, and they will be made to die for your craziness. Nobody
gets away.
In the Bible, there is a creature, a monster, at the depth of the
sea. The Bible calls him Leviathan. You can go in the depths of the sea
all you want, you are not going to see a monster that look’s like
Leviathan. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad said Leviathan represents the
destructive force of submarines that are at the depth of the sea, and
they bring destruction, but there is a way to bring those (submarines)
up. He said all God has to do is bring a wind, and let the wind start
coming in a circular motion, turning, whipping the waves, and as it
whips and turns, the waves disturb the submarine on the bottom. The
nose (of the submarine) starts coming up because the water is
disturbing it. As the water further disturbs the submarine it starts
getting straight. It’s coming now. Then the waters part and come back
together, and when you see the waves part and then come back together,
the ship is gone.
That is the same way it is with secrets. You have this thought
laying on your mind, and you have suppressed it to the depth. “I know
it’s there, but”—and all on the top is a false laugh, false this and a
false that because you are conscious that the secret is laying there.
Then all of a sudden God sends winds, turbulent things in your life
that begin to swirl around you. The winds of confusion are bringing it
to the surface, and all of a sudden you may see a little something,
just a word spoken, but the word is telling you about something else
that is laying deep under. All of us have something that we don’t want
somebody else to know. The Bible teaches, “Blessed is the man whose sin
the Lord doth hide.”

The
Honorable Elijah Muhammad lifted up a mighty example of doing for self
for the Black man of America. Many said the Muslims operated mom and
pop stores, and made mockery of our humble beginnings. However, the
Honorable Elijah Muhammad lifted up a light for all to see.
Look at what is going on in our communities around the country. There
is a scheme by wealthy White financiers to buy up all of the old
property in the ghetto. These same wealthy financiers are also sending
money into the Black community to foment gang warfare. The motion
picture “The Warriors” is a prime example of the glorification of gang
warfare, and their preying on the weak and helpless. This type of
activity is forcing Black people to leave the inner-city areas.
If this tactic does not work, arsonists are sent in to
burn down the houses of Black and Puerto Rican people, many times
killing family members while they are asleep, so that the Blacks and
Puerto Ricans will move out. These same White financiers and banks then
move in, buy up the property, tear down the shabby buildings, and build
high rise condominiums that the poor and Black cannot afford to live
in. This forces us into other ghettos away from the inner city, or out
into the suburbs. With the price of gasoline skyrocketing, unemployment
among our people will continue to rise because the poor will not be
able to afford to get back into the city to obtain and maintain their
jobs.
Financial Institutions and the Black Community
We must make the business world more accountable to us
also. Take, for example, the situation of banks and their relationship
to the Black community. Black people put millions of dollars into these
banks, but get little or no benefits in return. They take our money and
invest it, but the Black community reaps nothing because the banks do
not invest within the Black community. They take our money and build
houses that we cannot live in. We can no longer tolerate this behavior.
The banks that we do business with must become more responsive to our
needs.
Another example is the insurance companies, especially
Black-owned insurance companies. We want to see these insurance
companies invest back into our own communities
Spend Money Wisely
In the Honorable Elijah Muhammad’s monumental book, “Message to the Blackman in America,”
he writes: “There is no need for us, millions throughout the country,
spending our money for the joy and happiness of others. As a result, as
soon as we are thrown out of a job, we are back at the doors of White
people, begging for bread and soup. How many clothing shops do we
operate in the country? Very few. Yet, all of us wear clothes. Who made
our clothes for us? Who sold them to us? We have a few grocery stores,
but this is not enough to feed 30 million Black people in America.
Should we not have clothing factories making clothes for ourselves?
Should we not have more stores to sell our people everything that they
want or need?”
At one point in the history of this country, the Black
man picked cotton for White people. We must now pick cotton for
ourselves, and turn it into lint, and cloth, so that we can make
clothing for our people. Why should we continue to be the slaves of
these freaks from Europe who are designing the indecent styles of
clothing that Black people are wearing?
Look at us. We all wear shoes, but we have no shoe
factories. If the cattle gives its hide to the Caucasian people so that
they can take that hide, tan it, and make shoes for themselves, would
not the same cattle give their hides to you and me? Was it not a Black
man who invented the machine which revolutionized the shoe industry?
Yet we profit nothing from his genius.
According to government economists, last year Black
people spent over 100 billion dollars. If we took the aggregate income
of Black people, some scholars submit that we would be the ninth
richest country in the world. However, countries that are poorer than
we, are providing education, jobs, and medical needs for their people.
They are building roads, highways, and all kinds of housing, with less
money than the Black man in America has to spend.
We are throwing our money away foolishly. Last year,
Black people spent 2 billion dollars on alcohol alone. If we would stop
drinking, and put that 2 billion dollars to work, every Black College
in America would be finely supported. If we would stop drinking and
throwing away money on dope and other frivolous forms of “pleasure,” we
could build up a mighty, independent existence. White people allow us
to take 100 billion dollars out of the economy, but we refuse to be
wise and use that money to build for ourselves.
Our fraternal and Greek-letter organizations must also
learn to use their monies more wisely. Why spend millions of your
hard-earned dollars on big conventions, gaining nothing in return of
any substance.
The Masons must come today with your square and
compass, and build up the Black man to do something for self. Why not
use your monies to build a Masonic supermarket that will provide jobs
for our young people who are coming out of college? Why cannot the Elks
own a hospital which would give treatment to our sick and wounded? This
is how our monies must be spent today if we, as a people, are going to
survive.
Muhammad’s Example
The Honorable Elijah Muhammad lifted up a mighty
example of doing for self for the Black man of America. Many said the
Muslims operated mom and pop stores, and made mockery of our humble
beginnings. However, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad lifted up a light
for all to see. He was not working with the “best minds” in the
country, but with those that society labeled as social misfits, the
outcast and the prisoners. There were very few people who worked with
the Honorable Elijah Muhammad who were highly trained and highly
learned. Yet, he showed us how to pool our resources, go to the earth
and farm, thereby giving us the ability to do that which would one day
enable us to be independent, and gain the respect of the civilized
people of the world.
The Value of Land
In the last ten years Black people in America have lost
over 5 million acres of land through fraudulent tax schemes, ignorance,
and negligence. Many Black Brothers and Sisters have relatives in the
South who have land. However, despite having the education necessary to
aid them, many of you will not secure the land for your mothers,
fathers, grandmothers, and grandfathers. Therefore, our enemies are
allowed to take the land back from them, thus making you and me totally
dependent upon them for sustenance. Take the responsibility of making
sure the taxes are paid, so that the land will stay in the hands of
your family. Do not be so quick to sell the land for a few quickly
declining dollars. We must hold on to our land, for as the dollar loses
its value, the earth becomes more valuable. If that land can produce
corn or wheat, it will be far more valuable to us in a few days, than
all the dollar bills you can manage to accumulate.
Look at all the land in Georgia. Why do we not buy some
of it to build kilns, make bricks and construct our own homes? Cannot
we cut down trees and turn the trees into lumber, and build homes for
ourselves? While the dollar still has a little value, let us purchase
as much productive land as possible, for the earth will never lose its
value if taken care of and properly cultivated.
Respect Must Be Earned
As I have traveled throughout the country, everywhere I
go I see the spirit in the young Black student, which if properly
directed would cause them to do for themselves. We must remember, that
if we desire the respect of the world, you and I must do that which
will earn that respect. If our former slave masters saw us farming,
bringing produce to warehouses that we own, and shipping that produce
into the cities where we live; if White people saw us taking over
clothing, shoe, and food stores in our neighborhoods rather than
allowing Jews, Arabs, and every other nationalities to sell us
everything, they would then tip their hats, bow their heads and admit,
“Now, the Black man is worthy of respect, because he respects himself.”
No one respects a beggar, and up until now we are
beggars for a job, clothing, and education from the White man. No,
Black man, the time has now arrived where you must beg no man. You must
get up and do for yourself.

The Rev. Bernard LaFayette Jr. was resting at his Chicago, Illinois,
home one autumn weekend in 1967 when the phone rang. The caller didn't
identify himself, but LaFayette immediately recognized the baritone
voice.

By the time Dr. King made his final trip to Memphis, he was planning the most radical campaign of his ministry.
"Bernard, I need you," the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. said. "This may be my last campaign. We're going for broke."
Most Americans think of King as the "I Have a Dream" preacher at the
Lincoln Memorial in Washington. But the man who made his final trip to
Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968 had become radical, scholars and activists
say. King was gambling his legacy on a final crusade that was so
revolutionary, it alarmed many of his closest advisers. Some became
concerned about his emotional stability.
King called his crusade
the Poor People's Campaign. He planned to march on Washington with a
multiracial army of poor people who would build shantytowns at the
Lincoln Memorial -- and paralyze the nation's capital if they had to.
The campaign's goal: force the federal government to withdraw funding
for the Vietnam War and commit instead to abolishing poverty.
What King was saying by this time was even more provocative than what
he planned. In his final presidential address to the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference, he said the movement should address "the
question of restructuring the whole of American society."
He
called for a guaranteed annual wage for all able-bodied people, he
urged the nationalization of some industries, and he told people to
"question the capitalistic economy."
"It didn't cost the nation one penny to integrate lunch counters ...
but now we are dealing with issues that cannot be solved without the
nation spending billions of dollars and undergoing a radical
redistribution of economic power," King said during a trip to
Mississippi in February 1968.
The campaign was so risky that
King told LaFayette, a Southern Christian Leadership Conference leader,
during their phone call that he was going to appoint a new layer of
executives to the civil rights group he co-founded.
"He was anticipating that we might be hit with some assassinations, so
he wanted somebody left to assume responsibilities to keep it going,"
said LaFayette, who was appointed director of the Poor People's
Campaign.
Taylor Branch, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of
"Parting the Waters: America in the King Years," said King didn't
expect the crowds in Washington to embrace his vision of economic
equality. He expected violent reprisals from troops. He might die. Yet
King hoped that the sacrifice would lead to an economic bill of rights
for poor people.
"When he did the Poor People's Campaign, he knew it wasn't likely to win," Branch said. "It was a witness."
But it was a witness that few people were prepared to hear, said Roger
Wilkins, a U.S. Justice Department official designated as the liaison
between King's final campaign and the federal government.
"By 1968, a lot of white people had gotten tired of civil rights and thinking of race Wilkins said. "The picture of docile black people holding hands and
singing freedom songs had been replaced by images of poor blacks
rampaging through cities, looting and burning."
King had also lost the ear of his most important ally, President Lyndon
Johnson. On April 4, 1967, exactly a year before he was assassinated,
King delivered a highly publicized speech against the Vietnam War.
"Johnson was outraged," Wilkins said. "He turned sour toward King and the movement. He felt that Martin had rejected him."
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, King's own organization,
withdrew support from him. The group's board of directors voted against
publicly backing King's opposition to Vietnam. Other black civil rights
leaders criticized King as well.
"There were some black preachers telling him he was out of his element," LaFayette said.
King became depressed at times, Branch said. One night, King -- alone
with a whiskey -- awakened friends in adjoining hotel rooms with his
shouting: "I don't want to do this anymore! I want to go back to my
little church!"
"The shameful truth is that very few people were paying attention to him," Branch said.
King mused about getting out of the civil rights business. He
considered the idea of becoming dean of the chapel at Boston
University, his alma mater, Branch said.
"He was constantly
saying, 'Oh, I wish I could do this,' but he could never do it," Branch
said. He was just possessed by the movement."
Yet King's
evolution opened alliances with new supporters such as anti-war
activists, said the Rev. Vincent Harding, an author and friend of
King's who helped write his 1967 speech denouncing the Vietnam War.
"Some people were backing off at the same moment that there were other
kinds of people who now recognized that King was not there for black
people but for a new American society," Harding said. "Those who wanted
to work for this new society were seeing him as a hero."
What
this new American society could have looked like under King's
leadership is unclear. He never got the chance to lead his final
crusade.
He was assassinated in Memphis on April 4, 1968, while helping lead sanitation workers on strike.
The Poor People's Campaign has faded from historical memory. It remains
the most overlooked part of King's legacy, Wilkins said.
It
remains in the shadows because King rewrote the traditional civil
rights script, Wilkins said. As long as he fed Americans images of
bigoted Southern sheriffs clubbing demonstrators, people could remain
comfortable. But the Poor People's Campaign gave Americans a new cast
of villains: themselves. Americans didn't want to look at the face of
poverty, but King was going to force them, he said.
"When the
movement was just about the South, you weren't rattling the status
quo," Wilkins said. 'You were doing things that made Northerners feel
morally superior to the South."
LaFayette last saw King on the
day he was assassinated. At the time, King was still thinking big. He
told LaFayette that he wanted to globalize nonviolent protests.
King may have been isolated and dejected during those last days, but
that's not the man LaFayette remembers. He takes comfort from one of
King's final moments: the "mountaintop" sermon King gave the night
before he was assassinated.

One day after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Memphis
Mayor Henry Loeb - a shotgun beneath his desk - greeted about 300 black
and white ministers in his office Friday, April 5, 1968, shaking hands
with Rev. Joseph P. Toney while Father Nicholas L. Vieron (behind the
clasped hands) looked on. The ministers - who represented congregations
in wealthy East Memphis and the impoverished inner city - were
impressed with Loeb's cordiality in the face of such a potentially
uncomfortable confrontation. The ministers were calling for an end to
the sanitation strike and union recognition for the workers. But Loeb
gave no indication he was willing to compromise with the strikers. "I
know this might sound corny, but it happened. I knelt before Jim Jordan
(pastor of First Baptist Church - Beale Street) and said, 'On behalf of
we who represent the white race, I make a gesture of apology and ask
for forgiveness,'" said Father Vieron in a 1992 interview. At the time
of his death, Dr. King was on his third visit to Memphis in support of
striking sanitation workers. (By Robert Williams / Copyright, The

KINGSTON,
Jamaica On a sunny Saturday morning, history was made
March 23, as the leader of the Nation of Islam attended Sabbath services
at the country’s only Jewish synagogue, during a six-day trip to this
island nation.
Afterward he enjoyed a warm welcome and friendly dialog with leaders
of the host United Congregation of Israelites as part of the bold step.
"History is what the vast majority of people have recited to them or
is read by them from texts of historians. To be present when history is
being made is a rare privilege and one that all who are so privileged
should cherish," said Ainsley Henriques, a former synagogue president,
who introduced Min. Farrakhan during a post-worship discussion with
officers of the 300-year-old Shaare Shalom at the congregation’s center
next door to their synagogue.
"Today is one such day and this morning is one such morning. It is a
historical occasional to have you worship in our synagogue with us,"
said Mr. Henriques, who is also honorary Consular General for Israel in
Jamaica.
"I offer you my hand in brotherhood. I offer you my hand for
progress. I offer you my hand for the resurrection of humanity," said
Min. Farrakhan, who expressed hope that Jews in the United States would
invite him to a synagogue to visit and speak, to show he harbors no ill
will toward their community.
After almost 20 years of friction with some American Jewish
organizations, private meetings with rabbis and Jewish leaders, and a
ban from visiting the United Kingdom based on media misreporting of his
words about Black-Jewish relations, the Minister’s first synagogue visit
held important value.
The visit could send an important signal to members of the Jewish
community in America about the need, and potential, for dialog and
reconciliation with the Nation of Islam. It could also be a sign that
the children of Abraham—Jews and Muslims—can find a path to dialog as a
step toward resolving painful conflicts.
In a direct exchange unfiltered by media analysts and 30-second sound
bites, the synagogue leaders’ words of welcome mirrored an embrace Min.
Farrakhan was given by activists, political and business leaders, the
media and the public. He was received as a son of Jamaica, which was the
birthplace of his father.
This new chapter in relations was born out of Jamaica’s racial
diversity, religious tolerance, serious discussions with Min.
Farrakhan’s staff prior to his visit and outreach to Shaare Shalom by
Imam Douglas Owens-Ali, on behalf of Min. Farrakhan, according to
synagogue leaders.
According to Leonard F. Muhammad, chief of staff for Min. Farrakhan,
a type of diplomatic process took place the day before the synagogue
visit. The meeting between synagogue leaders and Nation officials
contributed to the comfort level of both groups, he explained. The next
step was to visit the synagogue and there is interest in ongoing dialog
and work toward establishment of a community of interest, without regard
to geographical boundary, Leonard Muhammad said.
Kind words and a spirit of mutual respect complemented the meeting
held this sun-splashed spring day, with discussions untainted by
preconditions from either side. It included questions from Mr. Henriques,
an elder in the congregation. He asked Min. Farrakhan about three issues
and applauded the Muslim leader’s willingness to honestly speak to the
concerns.
Two questions were about reports that the Minister blamed Jewish
people for the trans-Atlantic slave trade and has made anti-Jewish
comments. The third question was, did Min. Farrakhan have a message of
universal brotherhood to offer following the symbolic morning of
Muslim-Jewish worship. Min. Farrakhan enjoyed his experience in the
historic synagogue, with its sand-covered floors and multi-racial
congregation.
Wearing a kufi given to him as a gift by Imam Owen-Ali of Jamaica,
Min. Farakhan opened by saying he had sought this type of interaction
for 18 years.
It began when controversy erupted over a spirited defense of Rev.
Jesse Jackson in 1984, Min. Farrakhan said.
While running for the Democratic Party nomination for president, Rev.
Jackson had come under fire for embracing Yasser Arafat and making
critical remarks of Zionism.
Min. Farrakhan recalled how his passionate defense of Rev.
Jackson—sparked by fear of possible death threats against the civil
rights leader—resulted in a rabbi calling him a "new Black Hitler," and
how that characterization hurt him.
Unable to meet with Nathan Perlmutter, then leader of the
Anti-Defamation League, Min. Farrakhan noted that private meetings have
occurred with rabbis and Jewish individuals in New York, Los Angeles and
his home in Chicago over the past 18 years. "Ever since the controversy
began, it was my desire, and our desire, to resolve this conflict," he
said.
As attacks against him continued, Min. Farrakhan explained, some of
his followers probed the history of Jewish involvement in the slave
trade, using research from Jewish scholars. Their research showed 75
percent of Jews in the southern United States owned slaves, he said.
It was never said that Jews were responsible for the slave trade and
the involvement of Europeans, Arabs and Africans was also noted, the
Minister added.
He also shared his personal experience with Jews as a schoolboy and a
belief that his bloodline might include Jews who fled persecution in
Spain for the Caribbean.
In his youth, Min. Farrakhan said, the beauty of a Jewish cantor’s
voice over the radio in Boston fascinated him and how his affinity for
the violin, and respect for Jewish virtuosos and violin teachers may be
a reflection of this possible ancestry.
As a youngster, he recalled defending a Jewish boy picked on by
Whites at his first high school in Boston.
"I never, ever had a problem with the Jewish people," he said.
Min. Farrakhan noted his followers have no history of violence
against Jews, nor others, and no history of boycotting Jewish
establishments.
"If I am such a hater, why don’t my followers demonstrate that hate?"
the Minister asked.
He shared his belief that the sojourn of Blacks from Africa and
enslavement in the western hemisphere follows in the footsteps of the
Jewish tradition.
As scripture shows Jews suffering 400 years in Egypt and liberation
under Moses, Blacks suffered the worst form of chattel slavery for 310
years, Min. Farrakhan said.
One like unto Moses was prophesized to come to a people in a
condition like the children of Israel, he noted. No one can deny that
Blacks have been in a similar condition and America has been their land
of bondage, Min. Farrakhan said.
Courage to chart a new course
"It took courage to bring me here. It took courage to open your
hearts to receive me and I pray that there will be no backlash to what
you have done. … The leadership of Jamaica should applaud openly for
what you have done," said Min. Farrakhan to the synagogue leaders.
He also observed even well-intended words might be offensive
depending on the historical and cultural experience of the audience. The
Minister said his goal was not to offend anyone and that his desire is
to perfect his language to reach the hearts and minds of all who hear
him. Min. Farrakhan promised to seek truth, justice and righteousness,
which were reflected in the words spoken from the Torah, in dealing with
the Jewish community.
"If we can mend and heal the wounds between our two communities, I
can say that there is a possibility that we will be able to heal the
wounds in Palestine and in Israel today," he said.
God allowed the state of Israel to come into existence and there is a
need for Jews and Arabs to reconcile their divergent views about its
existence, Min. Farrakhan continued.
He urged the Jewish community to help heal Jamaica as part of an
alliance for progress. Islam, Christianity and Judaism must not be mere
rituals but must reform and transform human life all over the planet,
Min. Farrakhan said.
Following services in the 100-year-old spiritual center, Anthony
Lindo, president of the synagogue, welcomed Min. Farrakhan and admitted
that he was surprised when told that the Minister wanted to visit a
synagogue.
"I feel that we will leave here today with a feeling of unity and a
hope for mutual trust between the Jews of Jamaica, the Jews everywhere
in the world and the people of Islam," said Mr. Lindo.
He expressed a desire for a new beginning and efforts to make the
world a more peaceful place. Mr. Lindo presented the Minister with the
prayer book used at the Sabbath service and Min. Farrakhan presented Mr.
Lindo with a Holy Qur’an.
"As a nation we enjoy one of, if not the richest, diversity of
beliefs in God. Each of our various religions believe through a variety
of separate rituals and these all lead us to the same monotheism,"
observed Mr. Henriques, who presented the Minister with a book of Jewish
history and spiritual messages.
There is a remarkable tolerance in Jamaica rooted in a multi-cultural
past, in a nation populated by those of African, Asian and European
origin, he added.
"It is now (up to) people like us to try and go forth to fight the
battle, settle the negative, the hatred—all of the things, the mindset
that has been built up over the years," said Michael Mattalon, a
director of the synagogue.
Min. Farrakhan was accompanied by his security team, Regional
Minister Rasul Muhammad, local Min. Andrew Muhammad of Kingston, Supreme
Capt. Mustapha Farrakhan, son Joshua Farrakhan, Chief of Staff Leonard
Farrakhan Muhammad, Imam Owen-Ali, businessman Ransford White, and
Junior Lincoln, of 21st Century Productions. Mr. Lincoln’s group hosted
the Minister’s return to Jamaica, where he last spoke six-years-ago.

Divine Destruction
I “The Divine Destruction of
America: Can She Avert It?” America is the greatest nation on earth and
the greatest nation in the last 6,000 years. But America and her
people, which includes you, face divine destruction. The question is:
Can she avert it?
In the Holy Qur’an, the 7th Surah, or chapter,
in the 34th verse, it reads: “And every nation has a term; so when its
term comes, they cannot remain behind the least while, nor can they
precede it.” If every nation has a term, does America have a term? If
so, what is the term? A term is a time or period to which something
lasts. It is a period of time to which limits have been set; conditions
or stipulations limiting what is proposed to be granted or done. If
every nation has a time to which some limits have been set, what time
is it for America and what limits have been set for her?
In
the book of Revelations, the 13th chapter, the 18th verse, it reads:
“Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count [or calculate]
the number of the beast: for it is a number of a man; and his number is
six hundred threescore and six.” Some translations say it is the number
of a man, 666. The word calculate is trying to teach us that we must
ascertain the beast and the man by mathematical methods.
The
Honorable Elijah Muhammad is a principal helper in this calculation.
Most of us, as Black people in America, have not understood the Hon.
Elijah Muhammad, nor have we understood his value to us to get through
what’s about to come down on America. Either Elijah Muhammad is a man
from God or he is not. If he is not, then you can dismiss me and what I
have to say. But I don’t think you can dismiss me; and if you cannot
dismiss the student, then you certainly cannot dismiss the teacher.
If
White folk created or made a world that is unjust—lies, murder and
stealing are at the root of this world—then this world can have no
permanence in God’s universe of truth. So there would come a time when
this world would be judged and destroyed. The Bible and Holy Qur’an say
this world was doomed for destruction from its inception.

Both
the Bible and the Holy Qur’an speak of judgment and the hour and the
day—the Day of Judgment and the Hour of Doom. In the hour you have 60
minutes. In the minute you have 60 seconds. So the man whose hour has
come is the man of six. The scriptures say no man knoweth the hour but
the Father. That means the hour of total destruction. This book (Bible)
takes you right up through the judgment. This book (Qur’an) takes you
right up through the judgment, but the guidance of the Hereafter, where
there is no term limit set, there must be an everlasting gospel that
will preached on the other side of the destruction of this world. So a
new book is coming.
Allah says in the Holy Qur’an that He
is the Master of the Day of Judgment. Why should there even be a
judgment? When you get a judgment it means a judge has rendered a
decision. Judgment (according to the dictionary) is the ability to
judge; to make a decision or form an opinion objectively,
authoritatively and wisely, especially in matters affecting action,
good sense, discretion; misfortune regarded as afflicted by divine
sentence is also a judgment; also the last judgment, the final trial of
all mankind, both the living and the dead, at the end of the world.
When
we’re talking about judgment, in this case we’re talking about God
forming a decision that comes down against America and against this
world. God has sent down His decision. His intention is the total
destruction of America. The question is, is America good and by what
standard? If America has exceeded the limits, then somebody has to make
God’s decision known. Publish the decision. There is no appeal, but
there is a way to get out from it. It’s very narrow, it’s very limited,
but you can avoid it.
What is your position, Black man, in
this judgment? Whether you know it or not, you are the reason why God
is judging America. Even as it was in ancient Egypt, it was Pharaoh’s
mistreatment of the Children of Israel that caused God’s appearance and
His judgment. It was the Hebrews in Babylon, their presence and their
mistreatment that caused God’s judgment of Babylon. It is your
mistreatment at the hands of White people that has caused God to send
down His judgment on America.
The Book of Revelation talks
about a mystery Babylon. There was an ancient Babylon that we know
about, but John the Revelator was talking about a mystery Babylon.
According to the English interpretation, the word mystery means
unknown, uncertain, obscure, concealed, a secret, something locked up,
something that has not been or cannot be explained. In theology, it is
a supposed truth or fact of great religious importance which is beyond
human comprehension. In order to understand the mysterious one, we have
to know something about the known in Babylon.
In ancient
times Babylon, under the kings Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar, was a
great city of idol worship and evil. She was the queen of evil, rich
and well fortified. Mystery Babylon refers to a future city or a future
people. No city or people answers the description of a mystery Babylon
better than the cities and the people of America.
How is God
going to destroy America? What instrument is He going to use? Whenever
God gets ready to destroy any people He sends that people a warner, and
the warner is always raised from among the oppressed. That’s God’s
pattern. If America is going down, and she is, who are the oppressed?
It’s either the Native American or you (Blacks). You have suffered
worse than the Native American because the Native American can still
speak some of his language, he knows something of his history. But you
have been totally destroyed. And that’s why God is angry with America.
You may forgive her but I don’t know that God ever will. She is going
to have to do something real big to get out from under what’s coming. I
intend to make this known very clearly to America.
Look at
the warner that comes to Babylon. He tells his people to come out of
her (Babylon) that they be not partakers of her sins and of her
plagues, for her sins have reached unto heaven. He’s saying don’t
integrate with her. Come out of her way of thinking. Come out of her
name. Come out of her false worship and come into a righteous code of
conduct that will allow you and me to escape what God has purposed for
her. Now the question is have you heard the warner?
The
Honorable Elijah Muhammad said America is a preserved area. No foreign
nation will destroy America lest they get the credit. God will do it
Himself. He said America is number one on God’s list to be destroyed.
He talked about the four beasts: America, England, Germany and Italy.
These are four White nations that have acted with great wickedness
against the darker people of the world. He says the more you fight
against Elijah, the more God makes perfect through me. Elijah Muhammad
said, we will make the truth so plain that a fool will find it hard to
err.
He said that he wants every no good disbeliever off
the face of the earth. He said after this, America will never rise to
be an independent nation again. She won’t have the power that she had
last ye
