Foxydiva's Opinion Blog

The Mayor called another press conference but I did not have time to pop popcorn.  I hate that because I knew he was going to be entertaining.  It seems like this conference was more of a venting session.  Mayor Herenton I hope you got it all off your chest.  I fell out on the floor when he mentioned blogs, etc working on the minds of the public.  I don’t allow blogs or any other news source to sway my opinion.  LOL! I go by THE facts!  Mayor Herenton if you are not guilty of anything let them investigate. My advice is keep your nose clean!

One of the Mayor's famous quotes:  "I never worked in corporate America because I've always been a free man. ... Therefore, I could never work on a plantation. Some of these corporations are plantations."

Gotta love the Mayor of Memphis!

It was pretty silly. Maybe he figured he hasn't gone out and said a bunch of paranoid idiotic stuff lately and it was time to blow some out.
I've worked in corporate America and Ihated it just because I didn't like making nothing working for someone immoral.

What an analogy. What it really means is that he would have had to work. Period. Get up and be at work by 7 and off at 3; or be at work at 3 and off at 11; or, forbid work nights and go in at 11 and get off at 7 am. What a crying shame that would be. Why he might even have to work a 12 hour or a double. What a fate.
Gee, he mentioned blogs? Maybe he realized he isn't so well loved after all. He could probably take off his shoes and socks and count fingers and toes of the people who really care. What a sad sad creature.

I have worked in corporate America in Memphis and I have to agree with the Mayor, it is a plantation. There is a dual justice system, one for white and one for blacks. Former Mayor Rout left this city in 1 billion dolldebt and needed to be investigated for some of his practices. Why not, because he is white

My husband has worked human resources most all his working career. As much as I hate to mention color of skin, I will. The greatest majority of the persons of color prefer him than the person of color who is in HR. My husband is trustworthy and does what he says he will do. If he feels if he cannot help anyone, he will say so and why. They know he will put his own job out there to stick up for them when they are in the right, but they know he will escort them out the door if they bring in drugs or go against any dischargable policy.
I can not speak for the ecelon of corporate. Not many in most of the MidSouth can, frankly. Most of us work or live off welfare, mostly the latter and getting more so. We "boomers" are getting retired and old and disabled and there are not as many to replace us in the work force....regardless of color. And again, looking from a rural standpoint as opposed to an urban one, a whole different facet comes to view. But the problems of covetness and greed remain, regardless.

Most of the people I know do not live off of welfare. They are highly educated individuals with college degerees who are always working under someone with less experience and education. They are better qualified than the whites who are promoted quicker than them. We call that racism, I don't know what you call it.

That must not be in Memphis.
Their may be other reasons why they aren't getting promoted.

In some situation I have to agree with integrity. I have seen promotions occur when the individual is less qualified. Racism is still yet alive today. I work in a higher education environment I know.

Intergrity you have a point. I have seen promotions occur in this manner. It happens everyday. I worked on a job and knew it like the back of my hand. My employer hired a new person, and I had to train them. I had plenty of experience, but no "degree". This person had the "degree", but no experience. I trained this individual, next thing I knew, I was told that I would be "transferred" to another area, after I had trained this person. I left the company.

Mskaytenn, I have experienced that once in my life where I have trained an individual and she got the promotion and not me. She could not really do the job that well even after I trained her she left the job then I got the promotion that i should have had in the first place. LOL!

I think that most people have either experienced this, or know someone who has. It really ticked me off, but I moved on to bigger and better things. Glad you received that promotion you deserved!

Integ and mskatenn, yes often the degree will override the hands on. My degree is only an ASN. Everywhere we lived while we worke (before computer availablility) there were no schools close by to go further with my education. I say only not out of shame, but fact. My 20 years in nursing is prictless. Yet one of the CNA's that I trained who was excellent, intelligent, and a beautiful woman who was abused and never recognized her potential finally bloomed while working. After I moved and came back, she was no longer working as a CNA, but as a cook. BUT she was taking classes. She just graduated with her masters in family councelling. I feel as if I have birthed a new baby!!!!
My husband lacks only a few hours for his degree. Why he never got it, I'll never know. His plant manager is a man he hired as a fork lift driver. With my husband's encouragement, he went on to school in business management.
Again, my view is from a rural setting, not an urban one. The welfare attitude is so firmly entrenched here, it is a way of living that is passed from one generation to another as a passage of right.
In our county school system, ~ 80% of the students are on free or reduced meals; with the same on food stamps. Unemployment is ~ 14%. Another factory just announced it's closure by the end of the year with another 500 laid off.
We see Tipton, Fayette, Madison, and even Haywood Counties grow around us. We seem to be stymied as far as economic growth is concerned. But again, there are the few who seem to like it that way....
The small family farmer can hardly compete

He is either in the position to sell on the side of Hwy 51 or find someone to buy elsewhere.
But back to corporate "America". My husband's company is owned by a company in Canada.

This is not about you. It is about qualified blacks with better education and experience losing jobs to whites with less education and experience. We call that a plantation. Please read with comprehension
