The problem with lies is that the truth will always rise from the throws of obscurity. Edmund Ford was found not guilty yesterday of bribery and other related charges. He gave thanks to God for his acquittal and also thanked his family and friends for their support. It was a very touching situation. He consistently stated that he was not guilty of the charges that were levied against him and never wavered from his initial story. Some felt he was not only guilty by association, but he was guilty by the Ford name. It is obvious that other members of the Ford Family have had problems in the past; however family ties do not necessarily have a direct relationship to character.

Am I glad about his acquittal? Yes I am. He is a friend of mine. He has helped many of the members of my church and community with funeral arrangements whether they had the money or not. That’s just who he and his wife are…good people. Unfortunately, they have another upcoming hurdle in August that stemmed from alleged improper dealings with former MLGW President, Joseph Lee. My advice, this time, let’s wait until the case has been tried; until prosecution and defense evidence has been presented and the case is officially adjudicated before we pass judgment. After all we all would like the same deference if we were in his shoes. Sometimes bad things happen to good people. But by the Grace of God, good people usually find a way to turn lemons into lemonade.

I am happy for Ford also. I didn't think that he was guilty either. If he knew he was guilty, I think he would have pleaded out, but he didn't. He needs to be very, very careful about whom he associates with. Just because his last name is Ford, doesn't make him guilty. Did you hear a juror state something similiar yesterday? She should not have sat on jury, because she already had an opinion formed. Joe Cooper is crooked, and everyone knows this. This man has had his hands in all kinds of illegal stuff for years, yet I haven't heard one person saying anything about it! Many people had already convicted this man. I am happy for him, and I hate that he had his name drugged through the mud.

I had read a few blogs Pastor, and one character witness had the same last name as yours. Was that you? If so, bless you for doing so.

Sometimes good people do bad things. Persolaly I was supprised by the not guilty finding but, If he is not guilty good for him. If he is he will reap his just reward someday. God is the real Judge. Isn't it good that all sins are forgiven by God? We still face consiquences for our actions while on earth but God's children never have to face hell. Have a blessed day

mskaytenn that was me. My own station mispelled my name(Frazier Tappan). I did not speak about his guilt or innocence, but only my dealings with him both professionally and socially. In those arenas, he has always been a man of integrity.

I'll have to disagree here. I'd name this sometimes good things happen to bad people. I thinks he is guilty as charged. I thinks the state had a horrible person-Cooper_ as their plant who did even worse on the hot seat. But the judge has spoken, the jury came back with not guilty on all counts. Hopefully Ford will take to hear the thanks to God and "go and sin no more" attitude and action.

I understand your point Pastor. He is blessed to have had you and others to speak about your dealings with him. I have heard numerous others speak highly of him also. I have visited his mortuary, and I was pleased. The jury has spoken, so this can finally be behind him.

I also think that it's s shame that the government spent so much money on Cooper (putting him and his wife up in hotels, and giving them money to leave town), who has admitted many of his dirty dealings. He got caught, then tried to drag someone else along with him. I'm glad it didn't work. The government needs to look at all of the crooked builders whose names seem to come up in every trial in this city. Their hands are not clean, yet the government is not after them.

I don't normally reply to Memphis politics (I don't live in the city), but I have to agree, a panel of his peers found him not guilty and we should respect that decision. But I would not use the fact that he said he was not guilty, thus it must be true. How many times have we heard that to only find out that the person was guilty.
Pastor your ability to discuss controversially topics is refreshing, you could teach some civility to some other "pastors" that blog here

Pastor Tappan.. I met him once before during a storm when he and his wife was eating pizza.

i will say this, things happen in our lives that me must make a decision to do. I think that cooper wanted a lighter sentence and turned him in. We don't know what we would do if our family was face with things.

I feel that we all are short from the bad/good thing. I pray for his family.

p.s. Pastor Tappan are you going to let me have a book signing at your church?

It is what it is at this point whether you agree or disagree.... He better rest up he has Round 2 in August over the J Lee/ MLGW mess.

Just an observation I made... Watching him outside the court and at his "party" at the funeral home on the news.... did anyone notice how he holds his hands?? It was like he was handcuffed! Very strange.....

Pastor, do you have any radio airings? I would love to hear you. I listen to Pastor Paul Sheppard as often as I can. If you aren't on radio, does your church have CD's available?
I have so much respect listening to you--well reading you--I do believe you teach the Bible and His Word is where we need to be.
It is also so good to have someone that can be on another verbal side and be able to really learn and grow in such a loving atmosphere. You are such an inspiration.
Living over an hour away from Memphis, there would be no way to attend your church. So in some ways, I get to visit vicariously from time to time. Thanks for being you.

irishoaks you really blessed and touched me with those inspiring thoughts. I am honored and blessed to make your aquintance, even if only through the written word. Again thank you so much. To answer your question about radio, we do have a broadcast on 1600 AM WMQM, every Monday night from 6-7 p.m. It is called the "Life Changing Word Broadcast" We not only play a portion of the past Sunday's Sermon, but we also take prayer requests and pray for individuals right on the air. You can listen from the internet at www.wmqm1600.com
God Bless

I'm sorry, but just because someone is a "nice man" who "does you some favors" does not mean he didn't do it especially inlight of the VIDEO.
Not to mention all the other racist BLEEP he has pulled in City council chambers to sway people to much less savory propositions.
Pastor, that is what corruption looks like, when "being nice" sways the punishment of the guilty. A favor for a vote.
YOU GOT TOOK.
Do you think you can add all the damage done by this man's other caused walkouts?
What about the people he destroyed through his deeds?
Are they just "mushrooms"?
Sounds like Gang rules from the pulpit to me.
Callin it as I see it.

What I'm saying is:
Just because he was nice to you doesn't mean he didn't just poop all over a whole bunch of people.
Pidgeons are nice. They'll poop on people to. Just because they are nice doesn't mean they won't.
People loose all common sense in the face of a nice con.
Cooper hands over undeserved money,
"You'll get the votes or I'll make someone walk out."
How many times did we here that?

Somebody please tell me this. Where's the money? If this was a so "called loan ", is Joe Cooper ( FBI funded taxpayer money) going to get the money back he gave Ford or is Ford just going to keep it for FREE. Seems like the taxpayers should call in their "loan" and we should get our money back. Now we will wait to see how Mr. Ford handles this! Did anyone of the people convicted have to repay any of the money they accepted. Did their IRS tax papers show any of this money?

bubbah I have not once made a statement about his guilt or innocence. The truth is I don't know. I wasn't there when any of the alleged acts took place. I was only in court one day. I cannot give an educated opinion about the situation. I can only provide you with the benefit of my past relationship with him and the people I know he has helped. Whether he committed the crime or not is immaterial in regard to past good or bad deeds done. And moreover to insinuate that I have participated in some unjust arrangement is specious and unwarranted. Character is who you are when no one else is around. I preach the same sermon everyday...treat others as you would have them treat you. Unfounded accusations don't become you Bubbah. You are a better man than that. We can disagree without resorting to terminology such as "Gang rules from the pulpit".

I'm not saying you did it on purpose, I'm not saying YOU are bad or evil. I said "it sounds like gang rules from the pulpit", "sounds like".
You were there, we were all there, we were brought there by the aid of video. The video did not lie no matter what two crooks did. The video showed that he took a large amount of taxpayer money and promised an specific outcome from what should be a democratic process by law and that he totally betrayed the public trust 100%. No ifs, ands, or buts.
Particularly offensive to me and should be to everyone else here is his blatant use of racism and blatant racist tactics to acomplish his goals or meet his promises to subvert and betray us all making every single person of color in Memphis look more like a crook. Disgusting!
You can not remain in the presence of, invoke the name of, use the services of, unrepentent evil or uncontrite confesion and especially tyhose who do not confess obvious guilt born by witness of video without getting some on you, even if you didn't mean to.
I know you are an exemplary good man and an exemplary pastor. I could never hope to succesfully besmirch your good name, nor would I try. The Lord protects the good and fools the evil.
This was no wake up call for Edmund. He is not contrite, he is defiant. His heart is hardened and though he is the Lord's creation, his hardness will serve as an example, and not for the virtue of unrepentent slyness. That is a guarantee.
