Have you ever been watching the local news at five o'clock and the reporter promises to give you the rest of the story at nine or ten o'clock that night?  I've been a news junkie for as long as I can remember.  And as a newsroom insider, I understand why certain things happen during a newscast, while the average viewer might not quite understand.  But I have never quite understood the, "we'll have that part of the story tonight at ten."  What you're telling me is you don't have the complete story.  You've got to be kidding.  I go to bed at 7:30pm, 8:00pm if I'm living dangerously.  I will not be up at ten.  I won't see the rest of the story.  I want "that part of the story" NOW.  Don't tease me, please me!  I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

Have you experienced this frustration, or am I on an island here, like Tom Hanks in that movie?  Somebody tell me the name of that movie before ten tonight.

Maybe "we'll have the rest of the story at ten" really means, "we don't know squat now." I hope this is what it means, and it is not the news room's equivalent of a cliffhanger. . .like the soap opera's "tune in next week" or "tune in tomorrow". I'm of the mind that legitimate news agencies shouldn't be using film & cinema techniques when they "disclose" a story. Mucking with the presentation for dramatic effects smacks of manipulation & poisoning the well. That is interpretation and not exactly unbiased.

So. if u don't have all the story, don't gossip and feed us partials. Wait until u have all the dirt before serving it to me, is how I feel about it.

I don't like that, and I also don't like how your station always tells people to log on to your website to get more information..e.i. Bargain Thursday. Have you all ever thought that not everyone has access to a computer, such as the elderly? I know there were two cases were I noticed this, it was about the discount prescriptions, and then last week about weight loss.

Mskaytenn, I didn't have internet access in my home until three or four months ago, and whenever I would hear "for more information" you can go to our website, I would become a little discouraged. But, with us, especially on Bargain Thursday, we give you all the information you need in the television version, and then tell our viewers "if they missed it" go to the website to get information that can lead them to the bargain. At least that's my recollection of how it goes. I will talk to Valerie Calhoun about that. But your point is on point. Give me the information right now, while I'm in front of the television.

Thanks Ernie, maybe I'm mistaken then. It's like we hear what the bargain will be about, and then we are directed to the website to get more information and get the link, and so forth. I just think that ALL of the information should be given out on the broadcast for those that don't have internet access. I have blogged about this before, so I'm not picking on Bargain Thursday. There have been other times information was talked about, then the viewers were directed to the website to get information. In particular I remember last summer, when fans were being distributed to seniors, and they were told to go to the website to get the location and times??...

Would love to tune in, but am getting my 7 year old ready for school and he is a challenge and a half. Television is only a distraction that defeats our goal. In staying focused, tv has to stay off.

Efree- great photo. Were you at the airport?

My last question- what in the wide wide world of sports were you doing watching a newscast that said "we'll have that part of the story at 10"?

You know our late news is at 9pm right?

See ya dark and early.....

Yeah, I know our news is at 9. How'd you do in reading comprehension?

I did great in reading. Made up for my sub-par math skills.

How did you do? I'm asking because you never answered the question I asked you--

My last question- what in the wide wide world of sports were you doing watching a newscast that said "we'll have that part of the story at 10"?

Okay, I'm getting to the point where I'm thinking of starting a movement in television news. The "no teasing another part of the story coming up in a late evening newscast" movement. Channel 5 did a story on a rape victim Friday, and the reporter promised I would hear more from the victim or a family member or boyfriend at 10pm. No. I was going to be shaking my tail-feather at the club at ten Friday night. Turns out, I was passed out on my couch after trying to watch the Boston-Detroit game, but that's beside the point. The point is, give me the story and give it to me now. Give me all of it. And if you don't want to give me all of it, don't tell me you're not giving me all of it by promising me more at ten. IT'S SOOOOO ANNOYING.

Co-Host of the Emmy Award winning Good Morning Memphis on Fox-13, and a member of the Fox-13 News I-Team, I also make the best mac and cheese in the world. Just ask Valerie Calhoun. After an 18 month layoff, I resumed my golfing pursuits April 26th, 2008. I think I'm going to resume saying, "it is what it is." If I'm hanging out in Memphis I'm at Onix on Main Street and EP's Delta Kitchen on Beale Street. If you have a cell phone, I will send this text message: How about those New York Football Giants! all year long. I recently stopped drinking coffee, and life without it is fine.
