What would life be withouth coffee in the morning?  I'm about to find out.  Beginning Friday, I am going to attempt to end my daily caffeine intake.  The central nervous system stimulant that gives us that morning "charge" is highly addictive, can cause stomach ulcers and has no nutritional value.  And that says nothing about the brown stains on the teeth and the coffee breath.  Breaking free from caffeine can cause sleepiness, irratability and other withdrawal symptoms.  Early bets at the station say I will fail miserably in my effort to go caffeine free.  But enough about what Valerie Calhoun says.  Wish me luck.  And if you have any ideas, suggestions or guidance that might help me kick the caffeine habit, I would love to hear from you.

Hey Ernie, not sure on how much you drink in the mornings, but I wish you all the luck!!! I have never been a Coffee drinker, I love the smell of it but just can't drink it, makes me to jittery even decafe. And I can do without Cokes as well, So just hang in there, I got faith in yeah, Oh and I found this crazy artical that might help your cravings::

To stop the craving for caffeine or unhealthy comfort foods, repeat firmly in your mind: "I am letting go easily of everything I no longer need." Place your open hand firmly on your chest and rub backwards and forwards then around and around in slow circles. Rock your body backwards and forwards. Keep breathing deeply with the mouth open. You will feel comforted, calmed, and soothed, and will have bypassed the craving.

HA! Sounds crazy I know,
GOOD LUCK!!!:):)

Ernie - good luck but keep your tylenol close to at hand. Be prepared to have a headache or two. Your body will be screaming for it. Me personally, I'm screaming at everyone else if I don't have my "cuppa joe" in the morning....or my "pot of joe", lol.

i went to half caff at first so i didn't get all the head aches etc..., then i found 5 hr energy drinks and have been using them to wake up and smell how bad everyone else now smells because they drink way too much coffee.

if that don't work, try tea, it's got more caffine anyway.

Rena

So far today, I have had one cup (and I didn't finish that one) at work. It's 12:34 right now. Hanging in so far. I will be tested later today. I planning to go out and shoot an interview for a story we're working on about the Memphis Tigers.

I'm interested in this adventure- because I remember how much coffee you used to slug down when we were holding it down on the weekends.

How about an update today?...

Here is the update at 6:35 Thursday morning. I had three cups Wednesday. Normally I would have a minimum of 12 cups. So far this morning, I have had zero coffee. I am planning to make this the last day of drinking the stuff. That's the plan. So far, no signs of withdrawals. Although I had a tough time sleeping last night because of some spicy wings from Huey's. Thinking of going out in style today with some Starbucks.

Had the first cup (actually half a cup) at 7am. Just finished another half cup around ten o'clock. I think I might be done with the station coffee. The only question is should I have the "good-bye" cup from Starbucks.

It's 4am. It's Friday. And the coffee maker is not brewing at the house. The primary thought I have about going caffeine (really coffee) free is, 'let's do this.'

Co-Host of the Emmy Award winning Good Morning Memphis on Fox-13, and a member of the Fox-13 News I-Team, I also make the best mac and cheese in the world. Just ask Valerie Calhoun. After an 18 month layoff, I resumed my golfing pursuits April 26th, 2008. I think I'm going to resume saying, "it is what it is." If I'm hanging out in Memphis I'm at Onix on Main Street and EP's Delta Kitchen on Beale Street. If you have a cell phone, I will send this text message: How about those New York Football Giants! all year long. I recently stopped drinking coffee, and life without it is fine.
