I found this item in the USA Today.  The United States Supreme Court is going to take up a case from Washington D.C., about gun control versus an individual's rights to keep and bear arms (own a gun).  According to the McNewspaper of record, nearly three out of four Americans — 73% — believe the Second Amendment spells out an individual right to own a firearm, according to a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll of 1,016 adults taken Feb. 8-10.

Yet for decades, federal judges have seen the Constitution differently, allowing a range of gun-control measures imposed by governments seeking to curb gun violence.

Lower court judges overwhelmingly have ruled that the right "to keep and bear arms" isn't for individuals, but instead applies to state militias, such as National Guard units. The U.S. Supreme Court repeatedly declined to hear appeals of those rulings, fueling the debate over gun control and tension between the law and public opinion.

The case tests the constitutionality of a handgun ban in Washington, D.C., where in 1976 officials imposed one of the nation's strictest gun-control laws in response to alarming levels of gun violence. The justices will hear arguments on March 18; a ruling is likely by the end of June.

Let's talk about guns.  The last statistics I saw on this said more than 220,000,000 Americans own them.  So, should the government take them away?  Should we pay a fee to protect our homes, property and families?  What say you?

The right to keep and bear arms is our constitutional right. It is not guns that kill people it is people that kill people. It's an old saying but a true one. And you're correct that the courts have increased the tension. We already pay a fee to protect our homes, etc. - our taxes help pay the police departments salaries.

Should the Gov. take them away?, I say it depends upon the owner, as for my family, NO, they should not take them away.

Pay a fee? What!? Thats like having to pay a fee to own a Pit Bull.

Hey, what a great idea for Memphis! We already have convicted felons in office, convicted felons as police and convicted felons as security guards, I think they'll be happy to take money from people here, I don't think they'll be protecting anyone. You'd better pray to God that they don't take our rights away, especially here!
I'd be dead at the hands of a racist neighbor if I didn't have my gun on in my yard.
The police don't protect anything, they respond when it is too late and catch people when they can.
When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns, and you'd better bet the current outlaws won't be surrendering theirs!
Most thugs use illegal weapons illegally got from illegal dealers.
It would be good to get rid of guns ideally, but they have no plan to do that other than to tell us we have to give them up.

I would probably be like the little old ladies during the Civil War and bury my guns like they did their silver. Guns? What guns? But there would be a few of the small ones hidden away somewhere, you better believe it. Leave our guns alone!
