Having already documented the racial divide in Memphis, we continue our ambitious and on-going look into institutional segregation in the Bluff City.  Thursday night, we hold a mirror up to churches.  And we ask the question, why is Sunday at 11:00a.m. the most segregated hour of the week?  Do not miss the latest presentation of Memphis in Black and White, with myself and fellow I-Team reporter Jason Carter.  Thursday night on Fox-13 News at Nine.

NO ONE ! wants to admit the real problems why race is so prevalent in Memphis. Let's (together) observe the TRUTH !. Go to an outlying urban area e.g. Bartlett, Germantown, Colierville, Arlington etc. How many crack dealers do you see standing in front of the stores selling dope ? How many people do you see drinking in the parking lot in CROWDS at these places of bussiness ? How many citizens of these outlying area's tolerate loud music 24-7 in front of their house ? How many of these urban citizens watch their nieghbor strip a car in a backyard ? And say nothing ? The problem is that Blacks are notorius for commiting and/or not reporting criminal activity ! Not to mention the Memphis Officers whom are scared to get out of their cars and patrol these Godforsaken area's . Let me give you'all an example ! Go to the police substation on tillman in Binghampton. I cannot walk down Tillman without NUMEROUS drug dealers approaching me asking me to buy dope ! This occurs at an apartment complex that is half boarded up NEXT DOOR to the Tillman Police substation ! Go to the B-52 market on Hollywood ! They(thugs and dealers) are out of control ! Where are the cop's ! Sitting in Mapco on Chelsea and Hollywood ! Scared to or to lazy to do anything ! Go across the street to the grocery store and there is a picnic table set up next to the parking lot with numerous people sitting gambling and drinking out in the open ! Drive down Hollywood from jackson going toward Chelsea and look at the car washes and look down the side strees and it's total chaos ! Now ! Why is it that no-one in these c

Maybe you should, Ernie. Maybe backing away from the real issues that are in your face everyday when you live in these areas hasn't served this area for over forty years. Maybe the prevalent reporting style of not following up till the job is done hasn't provided anything but entertainment for newscasters. Maybe not giving any real thought to what you say has created a backlash and it's only hurting everyone. People watch TV and God help them, they believe that garbage and live their lives by the information they gather there,
WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO THE PEOPLE AND ALL, AND I MEAN ALL OF US HAVE COMPLETELY ABDICATED THAT RESPONSIBILITY!
So, maybe another stance is required.

Well, tonight we're looking at the role religion has in bringing the races together or keeping them apart. That's tonight's focus on the racial divide issue. Memphis in Black and White. Hope you watch.

Ernie --- I do agree with the other bloggers but I also think the church issue is important as well. I believe churches could be the first place unity could begin. This program has brought to light a lot of things that many people may not have ever known or wanted to believe...

I think what xgen might be saying is that the programming does tend to be very "PC" and maybe the real issues that cause blacks and whites to be seperated are not being discussed.

This is just a suggestion but maybe it would work --- Get several people of different races and opinions in a room and let them hash it out. I think then you might see the real picture of how true citizens feel about the issue. Whites are afraid of saying anything about blacks becuase the REVs will be here in a second to sue us for everything we have and that is just not right. Blacks are afraid to say anything to whites about this issue because "They just don't understand". I think it's about time regular everyday people got together to talk about this. Even though it may cause people to be angry with each other, shed a few tears, I think it's something this community, and the entire country for that matter, has needed for a long time.

xgen - I did not mean to speak for you and if I have completely interpereted your statment please correct me.

He means we have been shown the cold shoulder and the door from the "leadership" of this city and they seem to be a bunch of thugs and godless crooks looking to rob us of everything we have and blindside us all into following the red herrings they throw out as distractions to the real thing, getting along, working together, becoming human beings instead of low paid overtaxed and overbilled or ghetto trash or whatever they got planned. We are ready for ultimate chaos and we are ready to roll on it.
We have had enough is what he means.

The poor are already in chaos, their lives are chaos, every bill is an emergency to pay, always behind and feeling low, everything went up in price but us, our wages haven't budged an inch in years.
That's what too.

Ernie, my name is Derrick Williams, and I attend a church (right down the street at Crichton) www.fellowshipmemphis.org (Fellowship Memphis) that is doing EXACTLY what you guys were looking for and seemed to think didn't exist. Maybe you should check us out...

We are a diverse body (racially AND financially) who actively strives to address and heal the issues that exist between the races. We seek to understand and "vive le difference" in every area of each others' lives. We stand boldly in broad daylight and expose our weaknesses one to another, not seeking to throw "cyberstones" and hide our hands as is so often done in forums such as this one.

God IS actually working through some Christians to exemplify the heavenly unity He demands we live out on Earth.

If you click the "listen and learn" link, you can hear the sermon, "Being White in America" preached by Ben Parkinson, one of the white pastors at our church.

Hey Ernie, I'm tired of this mess. If there weren't so many here I wouldn't be upset and they probably wouldn't be shooting. I have suffered directly from racism in this city in the last three years with death threats and witnesses. I'm going to say what I need to. maybe you think the leadership has nothing to do with the racist atmosphere here, maybe you think political correctness and only saying nice things in the face of what is on the ground is appropriate?
Hey, if that's who you are, it's only entertainment.

Yes sir, that is one question, but the larger question for Memphis is if we can't get together (the races) in church, do we have a prayer of getting together in all the other racially divided institutions in this town?

I don't blame Ernie, He's his own man, sometimes in a situation that makes his eyebrows lift but not so sinister a scenario.
Look, the way Memphians run this is, any side that tries to have a culture different enough from the other to be considered "alien" and possibly "repugnant" by the other (due to clashing standards) won't be making friends across the line. when hate becomes a part of any culture it is doomed. The end doesn't justify the means, it just tempts all to do the easier solution, only the weak accept.

We are all time travellers and there is no war on earth that will survive death into the afterlife for some reward, including a race war.
I guess James is just so bitter that his text was mistranslated that his intent to make it literal won't survive the obvious intent to subvert that by the writers.
Harmony is the best word to describe what we need. It implies doing something joyful together to celebrate life.
Yes, we have a prayer of getting together. Unfortunately we will have to weather some people who can't see past temptation and anger, bitterness and rumor, fear of the future and familiarity of the past and the warmth of all it's predictability and unsuccessful flops.

Now, I'm felling you Bubbah. Harmony, yes. Realistically, I think you're right, we're having to weather the storm of the familiar. But we can do better without having to completely transform everything we do and think. Making progress through harmony. I like it. Step outside the box a little at a time. But get to stepping. The time is now. Good stuff man.

Living in the past will prevent us from moving forward and achieving what MLK fought for in the quest of Equality for all. We are all the same on the inside and if not for our cultural differences, life would be very boring. We all have something to offer in this world; a chance to be a blessing upon others and so many continue to take other’s blessings through senseless violence. The new generation of kids is growing up without parental supervision, rules, boundaries or limitations and most importantly, God and love.

God gave us free will. MLK gave Equality for ALL. What is the problem? Why is there still such a racial divide in Memphis? The Mayor has a lot to do with that issue based on his racial slurs and remarks during his reign which I have found very offensive. Is it possible to go colorblind for a change? Hate crimes should have nothing to do with color. We have to get a grip on what is happening in our World, our country and our own backyard.

I have had people tell me I am in the wrong neighborhood and all because I turned left instead of right. This is crazy and if all races cannot learn to see past color, the senseless violence will only get worse. So as long as people continue to see in color, the racial divide will never close. Learn from the past, live in the present and work together to ensure a better future.
