citizen13's Point of Skew

As I read through some of the other blogs here at foxmemphis, it would seem that there is a common thread that I see. The people seem to be unhappy with Herenton.

This year there is an opportunity to vote Herenton out of office. The question that comes to mind is who would be a viable candidate to run against him?

A.C. Wharton is an obvious choice, but I think that he is totally happy with the job that he has. I have seen Carol Chumney's name thrown around and obviously she has plans to make a run at the office of mayor. I am curious as to who else my fellow bloggers might see as an electable candidate.

I don't know if Herenton has thought about the fact that every time he annexes a part of the county, that he is annexing a group of unhappy voters.

Something that we as voters must realize is that unless a good, strong, well known candidate comes forward, then Herenton will win almost by default.

Let's hear some names, and opinions.

Ernie Freeman. I am actually being serious. His character and the fact he is straight forward in speaking his mind. He is intelligent, well educated and would have Memphis best interests in mind. He would be electable as he is a public figure who displays commonsense.

Carol Chumney hands down. We have seen her in action against Willie and know she will stand for the people in this town. She cares about the budget and doesn't want to see more frivilous spending by our elected officials.
We need her.

Well, So far, I have not seen anyone that I would think to replace the mayor. Not that I want him for another term..

I have pick out some that of equal to the replacement of th mayor

Bozo the Clown " oh I forgot, he's dead
Bubbles( Michael's monkey) dang, he dead too

before I say who I would pick up front. I want to know their views. That is one of our biggest problem, we pick without research.

I do know that the mayor has brought this city up to the standards of a major city. but it has come with a major price. I think is focus over looked his goal.

His temper and conversation is like talking to a dirty diaper. is smells.

I would ask that each and every one of whomever it may be required to post their references and prerequisites publicly both physical and electronically for whatever office it may be. Plus the number of terms one can hold office for also needs to be put on the ballot as well.........

This is exactly my point. Ernie Freeman, and Carol Chumney are the only serious suggestions that I see here. The only other possible candidate that comes to my mind is Myron Lowery. We don't have much of a "gene pool" from which to choose.

There are probably a lot of well qualified people but with no name recognition. Not everyone will research the candidates, a lot of well qualified people don't want the job for fear of dirty politics. The ones that are used to mudslinging are most likely not the ones that we want in office anyway.

As I stated, "unless a good, strong, well known candidate comes forward, then Herenton will win almost by default." He won't win because he is the people's choice. He will win because at this time there seems to be a lack of opponents. Either people will not vote because there is nobody to chose from, or many people who do vote will be going strictly on name recognition. Sad but true.

I wish people would stop trying to make it appear that choosing a candidate to support for mayor is so difficult. If we as a society choose someone with our best interest at heart, we can get them elected. It only takes a united effort. The mayor's job most important qualification should be someone with common sense. The city is run by the employees and not the mayor. We need someone who is more concern with the general welfare of the people and less concern with corporate welfare.

Destiny_Lane, I agree with your premise but ensuring Memphis is a place companies want to do business would lead to greater general welfare of the citizens. Corporations would flock to Memphis if it was a safe place to live and the education system had credibility. Memphis has a lot going for it, proximity to the rest of the US, this is why FEDEX is here, and the climate is exceptional. St Louis is starting to realize this and the city is growing economically.

I must agree with TomG. Safety and education are important to attract business. Business would bring in jobs, not just tourists. Memphis does have a good location, but we could attract a higher standard of living for us all with safe streets, and a good educational system.

Yes the city is run by it's employees. The mayor is an employee of the city. The people are the ones in charge. If an employee doesn't meet up to expectations they should be replaced.

The people are asking for safer streets, neighborhood improvements, jobs that pay a livable wage, and a decent education for their children.

The mayor has done okay as far as revitalizing downtown. The idea is to bring more tourist money to the city. That's good for creating tourism jobs, but the majority of those jobs are not exactly high paying.

The companies that do come to Memphis get property tax breaks. If they get tax breaks, the least that they can do is pay their employees a livable wage. When people make a livable wage they have money to spend that helps local business, and creates more tax revenues.

In the meantime, the answer always seems to be higher property taxes. People with enough money leave, and all Herenton can say is "Bye, bye." It gets harder and harder for Joe or Jane Q. Public to afford to live in Memphis. It is time for our mayor to revitalize the neighborhoods.

Again I say bring forth this candidate with common sense and the welfare of the people in mind. We need to find this candidate as soon as possible, or the election will have passed us by.

Citizen13, ditto. We need new candidates. Carol Chumney mentioned at one time she would run. I sure hope she does. She already has my vote.

At this point in the game, it is obvious Memphis will be the next toilet bowl of the south and the lower to middle class will be left with rubble. The rich should be paying higher taxes. Why should the rest of us hardworking taxpayers help to furnish their lavish lifestyles? Some of us can barely afford to pay the rent and utilities not to mention food and healthcare.

Sounds like the "Blogger Caucus" has spoken. I nominate Sunny1 to draft a letter to Carol Chumney that demonstrates our support for a run a the mayorship on our behalf.

Not so fast, that is the problem we we keep experiencing. Maybe, Carol Chumney can respond to our blogs and give us some idea of how she would address our concerns. If Sunny1 draft a letter to Ms. Chumney, please ask her to let us know her desires for improving Memphis and solving some of our problem. In that way, we could make an intelligent decision about who we want to support as Mayor. Remember we are "THE PEOPLE" and we want our voices to be heard.

For anyone interested in reaching Carol Chumney for whatever reason, her email address at City Hall is carol.chumney@memphistn.gov

You can find the email addresses of all of our City Council members at

http://www.cityofmemphis.org/framework.aspx?page=690>
We should all feel free to email our City Council with our concerns and ideas. There is no reason that everything should be confined to our blogs. Keeping them informed is the best way for them to be in tune with the views of "we the people."

I dont live in Memphis anymore, but I would still like to say, If everyone is so sick of Willie, then why does he keep getting elected? All you hear is him wanting to waste more money, and then there is always someone accusing him of being their babies daddy.....WOW.........I think the perfect person for the job is Harold Ford JR.

I think this is even bigger in looking for a mayoral replacement, we really should look at changing the qualifications.

The city is a business, and we need someone who can pull this city out of it's result of poor management. We need a strong business professional with a flair for bringing business into the city for growth, while improving the state of the city itself. That person needs to know that it will start from the inside out in order to get better.

A real business plan is in order.
