According to the Human Factors quarterly journal, “Cell phone distraction causes 2,600 deaths and 330,000 injuries in the United States every year” (2005). The same study reported that motorists who are engaged in cell phone conversations while driving are less capable than drunk drivers with blood alcohol levels exceeding .08.

Something to think about, and I'm sure the stats have gone up as cell phone useage has since 2005.

So if you are going to drive while talking on your cell phone, you might as well drink a few beers first....it's probably just as safe if these stats are right.

I was traveling in the fast lane and came up behind a lady that was doing 50 on I40. I was watching out my right mirror to pass and noticed that it appeared that she was talking to herself. Hand motions and all. Unfortunately I could not move around her as traffic was a mile long behind me. She would speed up and slow down etc. I finally passed her and sure as the world she was on a cell. I understand how cells can cause accidents because I was almost rear ended numerous times while I was behind her.

I agree with you to an extent, Tom. Some people lose the essence of what they are doing when they are on the phone. There are some people that can engage in conversation without forgetting they are OPERATING A MACHINE. Those who choose to put mind over matter should either not be allowed to drive or not have a cell phone.

They said that Bluetooth earpieces were made to eliminate the distractions, but some idiots STILL can't grasp the concept that their conversation is not as important as ensuring a safe commute for themselves and those around them.

The stats are crazy, the hands free phones aren't that much better, it's the distraction, not the Hands part of it that is the problem when it comes to driving.
Car and Drive mag recently had a report that showed if you Drink and Drive your reaction time is slowed by 12%...if you smoke weed and Drive it's Delayed by 21 percent, and if you text and Drive your reaction time is slowed by 30 percent....
Go figure.

Texting and Driving is legal.

I don't understand how texting or talking on a cell phone IS legal. I would think even though there may not be something that SAYS it is illegal, if you are being distracted by something while operating a motor vehicle in the state of TN it falls under negligence or careless driving [different from reckless driving] I know there were some bills that specifically address in 2002 [with exceptions to emergencies], but I would think there is enough evidence by this point to prove using a cell phone in any manner while driving would give way to a police officer's discretion to issue a citation.
