Hurricane Gustav, why should you care?

Having gone to High School in Slidell Louisiana, just outside of New Orleans, when Hurricane Katrina struck three years ago, it was a personal blow, because a lot of my friends were hurt. Some of them did not get out in time and wound up suffering. My friend Miss Edna wound up sleeping in the balcony of her church for 3 nights while the water went down. My Brother's business in New Orleans, wound up getting flooded out, and he was one of the one's who got flooded, and looted and had to rebuild.

I've heard Some people say that those who live on the Coast are stupid for choosing to  live with such a threat...but then pause for a second and think...we live on the New Madrid Fault...are we any brighter?

During Katrina we saw the best and worst of people as people stepped up their game to help out, and many scumbags stepped up to take advantage of those who had been hurt. One of the more hurtful things said to me during the whole crisis was that the people on the Coast and in New Orleans deserved what they got. I'm not sure what this means, but the person who said this to me nearly got the only tooth in his head knocked out., the bayou is my other home outside of the Midsouth and I wear my Saints hat proudly.

Just a thought here as Gustav looms on the water. If you can help someone out who runs from the Hurricane do it...please....eventually, it will come back to you.

Other than that, I'll give you another reason to care...if Humanity isn't a reason... 30 percent of America's oil, and refineries are located right where Gustav is headed, South Central Louisiana...so expect your gas prices to rise drastically, and while we can't control things at the pump....we can can control how we treat people.

Peace, Love ya.

Tom

I care because I hate to hear about lives being sweep away. So many people are hurt behind these horrific hurricanes some have lost their love ones and their homes. And even their dignity behind storms like katrina. People choose to live where they want to it seems that Memphis is experiencing a hurricane. Hurricane Murder where each day you turn on the news a life or two has been taken.

Right on Tom!! Very good blog!! I heard Drake and Zeke say yesterday on the radio that someone emailed them and said that Louisiana needed to be blown off the map, OH BOY that was a low blow for sure, and tell me what this stupid arse person is thinkin when he said this, does he not know just as you said Tom that if you treat a person bad it will come back on you one day and if the state was blown off the map hummmmmm I guess Miss. and Ark. would take a hard hit from the next hurricane and then they would have to be blown off as well! What stupid things that comes outta of some peoples mouths. Sorry I was ramblin on there.
I so remember you talkin about your family and Miss Edna. I wish them all the luck and hope they get through all this with no so much damage this round.
Oh yeah gas is already goin up, I had to fill up today while it was still low, $3.47 with ,10Cents off $3.37 I paid.
I also have a friend in Baton Rouge, he is a veterinary that owns his own business. When Katrina hit he had just opened his doors and was swamped with people to board their animals, This guy has 200 runs along with cages to hold these animals. He also was one that went out to save many stranded animals as well.

I let hurricane survivors use my house for free in Little Rock while I payed the mortgage. They stole everything in my shed and let their dog poop all over it inside, they destroyed the yard too. Not nice. I don't know what happened to them or where they went, but, they must have been living on the edge for a while.

I don't think anyone should call anyone else stupid. But my argument with folks is the expectation of entitlement that the "Government" is at fault and should DO SOMETHING.
We lived in the Florida Keys both in the mid 70's for 3 years and in the mid 80's for 3 years. We surely evacuated plenty of times. We got caught in one that did a loop-d-loop and came down US 1.
If people live in areas prone to natural disasters, then they should be prepared for the "big one". I attended the U of M Earthquake Preparedness Program they had in Ripley not too long ago. As they well noted, in the event of a big quake, it very well may be weeks before organized help reaches anyone. It would be up to the individual to provide for himself and perhaps his neighbors, to protect himself as well. The same holds true for those who live along the coasts. Hurricanes are an ever-present threat. Be prepared to leave as these can be tracked and notice can be given well in advance of a storm..Or be prepared to stick it out and suffer the consequences.

Irish
I am sayin this GUY said that {{{{Louisiana needed to be blown off the map}}}}!!, Now you cannot tell me that remark was NOT STUPID!???????
And it is not all The Government's fault, MY GOD! People don't have better SENSE to leave when they know what is headed towards them??
Just as you said {{{If people live in areas prone to natural disasters, then they should be prepared for the "big one}}}}}"
Do people HAVE to be told to move out When they see something comin towards them that might cause them to die??
Yes this guy who said {{{{Louisiana needed to be blown off the map}}}} Is STUPID for sayin that to anyone that lives there.

Now Okay, that is the most irresponsible thing I have ever heard you say. Why do you think he has so many blacks like Condi Rice and Clarence Thomas and he had Colon Powel, etc. in key positions in his close advisor spots and justice choice? Do you think it is because he hates blacks? Why do you think he has a modest home which has as many energy saving devices installed possible as opposed to the prince of hypocracy-algore who really hates the poor? Why do you think Bush had all the National Guard and FEMA and whatever was available to him on standby waiting for Nagin and that idiot of a govenor to request it as has to be done per law when Katrina hit? What do you think the guardsmen thought when the looters and punks were shooting at them when all they were trying to do was help? You are way off base on this one.

Deeser, I agree with you! I have so many friends who live on the coast, and they love their homeland, just like I love Missouri (my home state). We cannot all live in one place and we all take pride in our roots...where we came from. My family's farm is very, very dear to my heart and I want it in the family forever! We need to support our friends on the coast and pray for their safety. One of the most important qualities, I think, is compassion. Unfortunately there just isn't enough of that anymore. It isn't always about "me"...it should be about "you" and how I can help you. Our friends are in trouble and it is our responsibility to step up to the plate. If a massive quake hit the New Madrid fault, we would expect our neighbors to help us. It's our time to help and continue to help as many times as needed. As a Christian, that's my duty and it's your duty.

sonny, the guy who made that statement was a jerk. my deal is that the majority expect the "government" to take care of them instead of them taking care of themselves. obviously there are those who truly need assistance such as the elderly who do not have families, those who are in the hospitals, etc. But for the ones who are able-bodied---it galls me to no end that they expect and demand to have it all given to them.
Kristin, you are correct, it is our duty as many times as needed. I don't care if a storm hits every month. But for people to lay back like they are not responsible for themselves when they are perfectly capable is criminal in itself.
Nagin has the audacity to say Memphis will take good care of you. GAG. Do you in your wildest dream think he would lift one little finger for Memphis if we had a big earthquake? HA. NO.

As per the disaster that was Katrina...one of the untold stories that never got out is the New Orleans, Or Orleans Parish Levee Board...If you want to point fingers, there is a place to start, and if you wanted to line your pockets as a politician, there was a board to be on.

Well, Hanna and Ike had the Keys evacuate as well as Hanna hitting the Virginia Beach area. Lets see, did Amtrack go down to Ft. Lauderdale (as it goes no farther south) to move all the Keys visitors and residents to Atlanta? Did Amtrack go to Washington DC for the VA BCH residents and move all of them further inland to safety? Did FEMA put them up in hotels or community centers and feed them? Did the Red Cross provide diapers and toilet paper and everything else as has been provided for all of NOLA's folks? HA. Not in my lifetime. Maybe it is because they do not have inept mayors like Ray Nagin.
