300-Pound Inmate Complains Ark. Jail Doesn't Feed Him Well

BENTONVILLE, Ark.  --  An inmate awaiting trial on a murder charge is suing the county, complaining he has lost more than 100 pounds because of the jailhouse menu.
Broderick Lloyd Laswell says he isn't happy that he's down to 308 pounds after eight months in the Benton County jail. He has filed a federal lawsuit complaining the jail doesn't provide inmates with enough food.

According to the suit, Laswell weighed 413 pounds when he was jailed in September. Police say he and a co-defendant fatally beat and stabbed a man, then set his home on fire.

"On several occasions I have started to do some exercising and my vision went blurry and I felt like I was going to pass out," Laswell wrote in his complaint. "About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again."

But Laswell then goes on to complain that he undertakes little vigorous activity.

"If we are in a small pod all day (and) do next to nothing for physical exercise, we should not lose weight," the suit says. "The only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally being starved to death."

The suit also asks that the county be ordered to serve hot meals. The jail has served only cold food for years.

The meals, provided through Aramark Correctional Institution Services, average 3,000 calories a day, jail Capt. Hunter Petray told The Morning News of northwest Arkansas for a story Saturday.

A typical Western diet consists of 2,000 to 3,000 calories a day.

Laswell's suit was filed without a lawyer in U.S. District Court in Fayetteville.

C'mon now!  At that size he shouldn't be complaining about losing weight!  Another thing - dude is in JAIL!!!! He's not at camp, he's not at home - HE'S IN JAIL.  He should be happy that he is in the US and getting fed on regular, daily basis.  When I read this I couldn't help but shake my head at this guys audacity.  He's in jail awaiting trail on a murder charge and has the nerve to demand more food AND he wants it hot to boot.  This is a man who obviously has a problem with self-control and is honestly expecting the taxpayers to pay for his gluttony while in prison.  PLEASE!  Frankly I DON'T CARE that this obese jailbird is wanting more food!  What a waste of the courts time.

Morning Sian, some people should not open their mouth at all. He should be happy that he is receiving a meal at all. STUPID!! Hell some of them are eating better than the people on the street!

Morning my friend. Hope your day is starting out well. I agree with you. It's stupid. At least he's getting three square meals a day. There are people out there who don't. How dare he gripe about the free food he is getting? I have known people who didn't have enough food for everyone to eat. So they let their children eat and they did without. This man's nerve is outrageous.

People have some nerve Sian. You are right, I know of people that have to do this daily, allow the children to eat and the adults can't. He better be happy for what he's getting, better yet, since he is complaining, how about giving him NOTHING!

Not a bad idea MsKay - put him on a diet of bread and water and see how he likes them cookies! Better yet - how about good, old-fashioned gruel? I think that's what is the "dish du jour" in a lot of foreign prisons.:-)

I don't know. This has to be about dignity in prison. Prison rights. A part of a larger complaint about the culture within his particular institution. The inmates crusade and bristle against any effort by the trustees or other inmates to further erode their humanity. Under the principle that being imprisoned is bad enough, and being a prisoner does not make them "less than human". Men always demand that they are treated with dignity & respect. Even when they are prisoners. The dudes in the penitentiary got game, and know what the prison is supposed to be providing. Prison is not supposed to be luxurious, but it's not supposed to be cruel & unusual either. So this guy is probably taking one for the team.

Whatever. It's funny.
Only in America.

@Sian

come on now.
gruel?
gruel?
remind me to never be incarcerated at your institution. You like screw 'em. You a inmate now.

not crime & rehabiliation
but crime & punishment.

I believe in my heart that women are meaner than men.
that's just cold
too cold.

Do you recall the lawsuit a prisoner brought because he was given smooth peanut butter instead of crunchy? He won his suit. He had to be served crunchy peanut butter because the bleeding heart judge said it was cruel and unusual punishment to deny him his usual fare of nourishment.

Crony, Crony, Crony - they do have their "dignity" left to them in prison....they have 3 square a day, most have air-conditioning, heated rooms, blankets, clothing, no cruel and unusual punishment, etc.....Hot food is a luxury, special diets are a luxury (if not a medical necessity of course), hot water is a luxury - people can live with the bare necessities and survive quite well. The idea is to make them NOT want to come back to prison. It shouldn't be a warm and welcoming home.

As for the gruel.....hey nuttin wrong with that, lol. It's been a staple of prison life for centuries. Why do you think early Native Americans sometimes let their women torture their captives? Because they knew that women would get the job done!!! ROFLMAO

Irish - I do recall that lawsuit. It was a horrible waste of taxpayers money. Not to mention that it was just ridiculous!

He beat a man to death. I think it's improbable to "further erode [his] humanity."

If he wanted to eat 9000 calories a day for the rest of his life, he absolutely could have. Besides, eating square meals will most likely extend his life and reduce his risk for heard disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Actually, most likely because of his diet change the taxpayers will increase his odds at having "humanity" (by definition only) for a lot longer than he would have otherwise.

Tiger - Agreed. He made his choice. No one but him. And you're right - he will probably live much longer on a 3000 calorie a day diet than he would have on a 9000+ daily diet. That's just statistics.

The lawsuit is very far fetched, yeah this guy is big and I am sure he is getting the same amount of food as a 90lb.with- drawing crack head gets, but I have to agree with what TruT. said about his health, he has more chances of dieing from over eating, or to keep his weight the same 413lbs.

That's right Sonny. Not to mention the fact that I have absolutely no sympathy for this mans request. Zero. Zilch. None.

I still like the gruel idea. Make it some sort of a barley gruel to give it a medieval flavor. Serve it with water. No bread because the barley will give them the carb boost they need. Make sure they serve it in a wooden bowl too. Splinters make for good shivs. And toothpicks.

@Sian:

Why do you think early Native Americans sometimes let their women torture their captives? I didn't know this, but I can believe it. Women are sweet, but when "mean" is switched on it is far beyond the "mean" guys exhibit.

Sian, I'd bet you'd over work him after under feeding him too.

WOW!! Sian I thought I could say some cruel things, you got me beat by far, lol
That wooded bowl could be way too deadly , an being hungry at that, I sure would not want to be around him, damn stick, stick-up

Crony:

FYI - I would only require that they work 12 hour days. On the chain gang. With the real ball and chain. Hopped up on gruel.

:-)

Sonny - I'm sorry babe this one just struck me as ludicrous in more ways than one, lol. I can just imagine the obese jailbird flying after the guards brandishing his splintery wooden bowl threatening to stick the guard with it because he wants an extra PB & J sandwich, lolololol.
