Georgia Mother and Daughter Charged in Teacher Attack

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

ATLANTA  —  Atlanta police have arrested a high school student and her mother in the beating of the girl's teacher.

Forty-four-year-old Georgia Thornton and her daughter, 17-year-old Sequita Thornton, have been charged with attacking Felecia Williams at Southside High School on February 28th.

According to a police report, the mother was charged with battery on a school teacher, disrupting public schools, criminal trespass and theft by taking in connection with the attack. Sequita was charged with battery on a teacher and disrupting public schools.

Atlanta Public Schools spokesman Joe Manguno says Atlanta school officials have also permanently expelled the girl and ordered her to pay $500 toward the teacher's medical expenses.

Williams said Tuesday she had met with Thornton previously to discuss Sequita's grades and sporadic attendance.

On the day of the incident, Williams says the pair walked into her classroom during class and began arguing about a book. The teacher says she asked them to leave, but the mother pushed past her and grabbed a book off her desk.  According to a police report, when Williams tried to get the book back, the mother pulled the teacher's hair and threw her to the ground. Then the mother and daughter stomped on the teacher.

Only expelled?  I don't think so!  This mother and daughter tag team should be in jail for this.  What kind of parent not only allows, but starts a physical fight with their childs teacher?  I hope that the teacher sues them for everything they own now and will own in the future.  Children should be taught RESPECT for authority figures.  Instead you have trash like this parent saying...."well hey, if you don't like them then kick their butt!"  This is a perfect example of why this country is in the state it is in with our children.  Parents acting like thugs and encouraging their children to do the same.  This parent should lose custody of this child and any others in the household.

I'm surprised my daughter hasn't told me about this. She lives in a suburb about 20 minutes north of Atlanta proper. Fortunately their town has a great school.
This mother and daughter should be arrested, tried, convicted, thrown under the jail...held financially accountable for the medical and emotional charges of that teacher. That daughter should have to finish school ina boot-camp type of school.

Morning ladies! Hope you're not letting this dreary weather get ya down :-)

MsKay - that's right - it is trifling. Obviously the mother has no morals or respect to teach the daughter. It's sad - and disgusting.

Tiger Girl - I like that idea! Norplant in her food - hmmmmm........

Irish - A boot-camp might be a good idea for the mother too. The daughter is going to grow up to be a bully and a thug if this is allowed to continue.

Just when you think you have heard it all this is ridiculous! Soon teachers will have to wear bullet proof vests to work. OMG this is so outlandish! This is how schools lose good teachers.

Heya there 55! Sonny - :-) Hi!

Sonny I hadn't heard that. I'll go back and see what I can find. Thanks!

No kind of parent should do something like this. It seems like the kids today have no guidelines to go by. No limits. That is harmful not just to society around them but to themselves as well. Sheesh! What's wrong with people???!!!

Foxy - Hello there.......:-)
It's a sad day when teachers have to fear going to their classrooms. Man - want to talk about not being paid enough!

Yeah if this is the one Ernie and Val were talking about this week, they said the teacher hit first.

Well if she did - that's just as bad as the parent throwing the first swing. I think someone should have asked the question.."And who are the grown ups in this situation?"

Strange that this article from Foxnews didn't mention the teacher throwing the first punch. Here is what another article had to say about it...The teacher (Williams) said the pair walked into her classroom ....

" during first period and began arguing about a book. Williams asked them to leave, but the mother pushed past her and grabbed a book off her desk, the teacher said.

When Williams, 40, tried to get the book back, the mother pulled the teacher's hair and threw her to the ground, the police report said. Then the mother and daughter stomped on the teacher, according to the report.

"She was swinging me by my hair, and my shoes flew off my feet," Williams said. "Then I was on the ground, and they were both pounding on me. I was terrified. So were my students."

That mother and daughter should had gotten more than the daughters expelled, either way if the teacher did hit first or not, those two did a throw down on this poor teacher and did it in front of other students, thats just crazy!! And when I heard them talking about this, they kept playing in the background, "I got tired of those punches" Over and over, , but I may had mis understood which one they were talking. about.

I just don't think that expelling the daughter is enough punishment for her. I would think they would both be facing some criminal charges.

Right on Sian, that was assault. And also maybe they could had caused danger to the kids in the class room. You never know what someone will do when in a heated battle.
