With the latest scandel to hit Bellvue Baptist maybe it's time that the leaders stop judging the members and look at who they have setting an example. It really seems unfair that they pass such a quick judgement on others when their own house is not clean.
Everyone makes mistakes in their lives but my question is if they are true christians then they should know that they are not the Judge, Jury, and executionor, that there is only one who has that power and it is no mortal.
My family use to go to Bellvue but quickly learned and seen the double standards toward people in the church.
To say the all mighty dollar does not mean anything in the eyes of the church is all out deception. Those who contribute more will and do make the rules. Nothing has changed in the church's throughout this country. My family will now do our own worship and reading of the bible at home. Family stand together and will always be more powerful then the biggest church with all the money.

The almighty dollar means everything to the "church".

To see that this pastor at bellvue is on paid lleave is disgraceful...PAID LEAVE????
My God, people are homeless and hungry and the church puts him on paid leave? If you or I was put on administrative leave they wouldn't pay us, so why are these people in goverment, in churches all still getting paid? They need to be brought into the reality of what the working class barely getting by if even that world is really like.

It is truly sad to see what has happened at Bellevue (not only the recent allegations but the friction between Pastor and deacons, etc.) and I can certainly emphasize with the writer of this blog (and his family)_ who have left the church and worship at home.

Just this evening there are even more problems with Bellvue and the request for the Pastor to resign. This has gotten out of control and just makes me justify my earlier comments of leaving the church. Has the church finally gotten to big and started to explode from the inside out. What other dark secrets will surface and who will be next to leave? Hopefully God has not looked away from the people who really need the church and the word to help them with their daily souls and troubles.

There may be something to the "too big" issue although that is certainly not the CAUSE of this. Perhaps a smaller congregaton would be better for you and your family?

Many of the same things that are happening at Bellvue have happened to other faiths. It will all work out in the end, we went through it in our faith {Catholic}. It is to bad that it has taken so long for it to come to the surface, it so easy today to be able to be deceptive and hide behind the cloth.

Perhaps one of the problems with the Mega-Church is that it can get rather large and impersonal. (I have found most churches in Memphis to be rather superficial when it comes to genuine fellowship but I digress...). When something is so BIG it is easier to have some anonymity and perhaps as lillady said, "hide behind the cloth." Just a thought. I know it can happen in smaller churches too however.

By the way, I don't want to be taken as anti-Bellevue. Actually, I have visited there on occasion and have attended Singing Christmas Tree and Passion Play since we have been in Memphis. Since it is 25 miles from where we live, it just wasn't a convenient choice for a local church.

Both lillady and puddleglumm make very good points. The impersonal does happen even in smaller congregations. I thank you both for your comments

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL. Don't forget to pray for the folks at Bellevue. However is "right", it is still difficult to go through what they are going through as a congregation. They aired the Singing Christmas Tree this morning on Channel 3. It reminded me on the tremendous ministry that that congregation has had. I pray that it will not be destroyed by this issue.

I should add that we should pray specifically for Pastor Gaines. I can imagine what his Christmas was like.
Whatever mistakes he has made, he is human and imperfect like all of us.
It must be incredibly difficult to follow Dr. Adrian Rogers who was so loved and well known! Anything Dr. Gaines does differently will certainly be suspect at best.

I don't know the WHOLE story and I am sure that there are valid points on both sides of the debate, but for the sake of the Gospel, I pray that this will not continue to snowball.

I moved to Memphis in 2001 to fulfill a lifelong dream to make the city that Elvis called home my home. I amd disabled and a stay at home father of two teenagers and have been married almost 17 years. I have watched this city and the games being played in the political circle and have thought to myself that the people in this great city need to make a change with whom they have entrusted to lead them.
