Money Trail: Lobbyists Gone Wild as Obama Remains Silent

Campaign Reform Groups Criticize Obama's Failure to Speak Up on Convention Excess

By BRIAN ROSS, RHONDA SCHWARTZ, and AVNI PATEL
Aug. 25, 2008

Despite a campaign that attacked corporate and special interest lobbyists as evil and banned their money and participation, Sen. Barack Obama has done little, if anything, about their pervasive, free-spending presence at the Democratic convention in Denver, ethics watchdog groups say.

"I think he could have sent a signal to say I want this tamped down," said Ellen Miller of the Sunlight Foundation, a political ethics watchdog group.

"But he has not," she said, "so it's party time."

(Brian Ross reports tonight from Denver, on the Money Trail, for World News with Charles Gibson.)

A spokesman for the Obama campaign, Ben LaBolt, said the Senator could not "make changes to this year's convention" because of the "very late end to the primary season."

As a result, lobbyists are once again spending millions of dollars here on gourmet food, top-shelf liquor and private lavish parties for Democratic elected officials who seem more than happy to play the role of world-class freeloaders.

According to Denver's top chefs and caterers, no expense is being spared.

Kevin Taylor, of the Denver restaurant Palette, who says he is the only four-star chef in Denver, says he is booked to prepare delicacies for more than 100 "high end, hush-hush events."

"The demand is over the top, you've never seen anything like this," said chef Taylor, especially for his signature King Crab terrine appetizer with white champagne caviar.

At the Ritz Carlton Hotel, where rooms for Democratic VIP's are now going for $2,000 a night, the executive chef, Andre Jimenez, says even the room welcome gifts need to be elaborate for the 35 top donors and celebrities, including "the rarest peaches in America."

"It's only for the best of the best that we host here," the chef told ABC News.

"We're seeing lobbyists gone wild," said Craig Holman of Public Citizen, a non-profit group that lobbied for the new ethics law enacted last year, aimed at curbing lobbying abuses.

"Many of the new rules also apply to the national nominating conventions, though the public would not know this by looking at the roster of parties being planned by lobbyists and lobbying organizations," Holman wrote in a letter to both Democratic and Republican members of the House of Representatives.

Wind farms put pressure on bats

By Richard Black

Environment correspondent, BBC News website

Wind turbine at night

The rotating blade produce a pressure drop that can harm bats

Bats are at risk from wind turbines, researchers have found, because the rotating blades produce a change in air pressure that can kill the mammals.

Canadian scientists examined bats found dead at a wind farm, and concluded that most had internal injuries consistent with sudden loss of air pressure.

Bats use echo-location to avoid hitting the blades but cannot detect the sharp pressure changes around the turbine.

The scientists say wind farms are more of an issue for bats than for birds.

"An atmospheric pressure drop at wind turbine blades is an undetectable - and potentially unforseeable - hazard for bats, thus partially explaining the large number of bat fatalities at these specific structures," said Erin Baerwald, who led the research team at the University of Calgary.

U.S., Russia anchor military ships in Georgian ports

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

In this image provided by the US Navy the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Dallas heads to sea in Souda Bay, Crete with a load of humanitarian assistance supplies for the Republic of Georgia Friday, Aug. 22, 2008. The United States has canceled plans to try to dock the military ship carrying humanitarian aid in the Georgian port of Poti, where Russian forces are posted on the outskirts, a U.S. Embassy spokesman said Wednesday Aug. 27, 2008. (AP Photo/US Navy - Paul Farley)

BATUMI, Georgia - A U.S. military ship docked at a southern Georgian port Wednesday, prompting Russia to send three naval ships to another Georgian port. The moves by both sides underscored an escalating standoff between Moscow and the West over this small Caucasus nation devastated by war with Russia.

The dockings came a day after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev recognized two Georgian rebel territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states, prompting harsh criticism from Western nations.

The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Dallas, carrying 34 tons of humanitarian aid, docked in the Black Sea port of Batumi, south of the zone of this month's fighting between Russia and Georgia. The arrival avoided Georgia's main cargo port of Poti, still controlled by Russian soldiers.

The U.S. Embassy in Georgia had earlier said the ship was headed to Poti, but then retracted the statement. Zaza Gogava, head of Georgia's joint forces command, said Poti could have been mined by Russian forces and still contained several sunken Georgian ships hit in the fighting.

Poti's port reportedly suffered heavy damage from the Russian military. In addition, Russian troops have established checkpoints on the northern approach to the city and a U.S. ship docking there could be perceived as a direct challenge.

Meanwhile, Russia's missile cruiser, the Aurora, and two missile boats, anchored at the port of Sukhumi, the capital of Abkhazia, some 180 miles north of Batumi. The Russian navy says the ships will be involved in peacekeeping operations.

Although Western nations have called the Russian military presence in Poti a clear violation of an European Union-brokered cease-fire, a top Russian general has called using warships to deliver aid "devilish."

Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn warned that NATO has already exhausted the number of forces it can have in the Black Sea, according to international agreements, and warned Western nations against sending more ships.

"Can NATO - which is not a state located in the Black Sea - continuously increase its group of forces and systems there? It turns out that it cannot," Nogovitsyn was quoted as saying Wednesday by the Interfax news agency.

Western leaders assailed Russia for violating Georgia's territorial sovereignty and the Georgian government said Wednesday it will withdraw some of its diplomats from Moscow.

UK urges tough response to Russia

 David Miliband

Mr Miliband said Russia's declaration inflamed an already tense situation

UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband has called on the EU and Nato to initiate "hard-headed engagement" with Russia in response to its actions in Georgia.

In a speech in Ukraine's capital, Kiev, he urged them to bolster their allies, re-balance the energy relationship with Russia and defend international law.

Mr Miliband's visit came a day after Russia recognised the independence of Georgia's two breakaway regions.

Earlier, Ukraine's president said it was a hostage in a war waged by Russia.

Victor Yushchenko told Mr Miliband that the brief conflict between Georgia and Russia earlier this month had exposed serious weaknesses in the powers of the UN and other international bodies.

Russia 'Not Afraid' of a New Cold War

Russian President Says His Country Does Not Want a new Cold War, But Is Not Afraid of One Either

MOSCOW, Aug 26, 2008

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, speaking in the midst of one of the lowest points in the Russia-West relationship since the breakup of the Soviet Union 17 years ago, said Tuesday that his country did not seek a new Cold War — but neither was it afraid of one.

Medvedev speaking amid the conflict with Georgia, warned on Monday that any further aggression against Russian citizen would face a "crushing response". Collapse(Alexander Natruskin/Reuters)

"We are not afraid of anything, including the prospect of a new Cold War," Medvedev was quoted as saying Tuesday by the ITAR-Tass news agency. "But we don't want it and in this situation everything depends on the position of our partners."

The statement comes hours after Medvedev recognized the independence of two Georgian rebel provinces, defying the West. The recognition — which Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice described as "extremely unfortunate" — follows a short but intense war with Western-allied Georgia earlier this month.

"If they want to preserve good relations with Russia in the West, they will understand the reason behind our decision," Medvedev said.

Medvedev said that he had signed a decree on the decision to recognize the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Few other nations are likely to follow the move. To Read the Whole Article go to:

My Son, The Lobbyist: Biden's Son a Well-Paid DC Insider

Firm Lobbies Senator Biden Although Son Does Not

By EMMA SCHWARTZ

Aug. 24, 2008

The Son of Barack Obama's vice presidential pick, Sen. Joe Biden, is a top partner at a Washington law firm that has lobbied his father's office, a family tie that could prove embarrassing for a campaign that has positioned itself as fighting lobbyists and special interests in Washington.

Collapse(AP Photo/Mark Hirsch)

In the first six months of this year R. Hunter Biden, a founding partner of Oldaker, Biden & Belair, has worked on accounts that brought it $470,000 from nine clients, according to lobbying disclosure records.

Although firm members say Biden, 38, does not lobby his father, this kind of family tie, said Ellen Miller, executive director of the Sunlight Foundation, "raises the potential of a conflict of interest."

For its part, the Obama campaign said that Sen. Biden had always followed ethics rules. "Hunter Biden has never lobbied Sen. Biden's office or committees, period," David Wade, Obama-Biden spokesperson, wrote in an email response.

"He's never worked on a client issue where other members of the firm have lobbied the office. Hunter shares expenses not revenues with his partners, so there's no benefit to him when a partner lobbies. Sen. Biden has been as strong a supporter of ethics reform as the Senate has known, and his office follows all ethics laws right down to the letter."

But the connections between the law firm and Biden are very close.

Little Known Heros of the Revolution

The Boston Massacre

March 5th 1770.  The Boston Massacre....Crispus Attucks was not only the First  American Martyr of the Revolution, he was also the Organizer and leader of the Crowd that confronted the British Soldiers at Boston that day.    He was also the Formost in Resisting the British Soldiers and as a result the First one Killed.

In 1851 there was a Petition presented to the Massachusetts Legislature for the appropriation of Funds to build a Monument to the First American Martyr of the Revolution, Crispus Attucks.  The Petition was denied.

On the 5th of March, 1776, Washington repaired to the intrenchments. "Remember," said he, "it is the 5th of March, and avenge the death of your brethren!"

The Battle of Bunker Hill

June 17th 1775, The Battle of Bunker Hill.   Patriots after surronding the City of Boston, took up postions on the Charlestown Peninsula on top of Bunker Hill and Breed's Hill North of town across the Bay.   During this battle between 1,500 American Patriots and 2,400 British Soliders took part.  While the British did take both Hills they suffered Heavy losses.  British casualties were about 1,150 killed and wounded, while the Patriots suffered 450 Killed and wounded.

But out of those who died 2 famous People were Killed in the Fighting.  A Patriot named General Warren and a British Major of Marines Pitcarin.  The Little known Hero is the Man who Killed Major Pitcarin was named Henry Hill.   After the Battle he was was presented to General Washington for his heroic Fighting and the killing of the Major.   In Pictures made of the Battle he was at First a Prominent Figure, but over time he has been forgotten and ingloriously left out.

Henry Hill also fought in the battles of Lexington, Brandywine, Monmouth, Princeton, and Yorktown. He died in Chilicothe, on the 12th of August, 1833, aged eighty years. He was buried with the honors of war and eventually forgotten to History.

Dorchester Heights

On March 4th, 1776 Boston.  Washington received 59 Cannon from the Captured British fort of Ticondaroga.  Overnight the Patriots Constructed Fortifications and installed the Cannon on the Heights overlooking Bristish occupied Boston.   This move eventually led to the British evacutaion of Boston on March 17th, 1776.  March 17 is celebrated as Evacuation Day in some Massachusetts communities.

But one Little known Hero is James Easton.   James Easton, of Bridgewater, was one who participated in the erection of the fortifications on Dorchester Heights, under command of Washington.  His talents were invaluable in the Construciton of the fortifications.

Mr. Easton was a manufacturing blacksmith, and his forge and nail factory, where were he also made edge tools and anchors, was extensively known, for its superiority of workmanship. Much of the iron work for the Tremont Theatre and Boston Marine Railway was executed under his supervision. Mr. Easton was self-educated. When a young man, stipulating for work, he always provided for chances of evening study. He was welcome to the business circles of Boston as a man of strict integrity, and the many who resorted to him for advice in complicated matters styled him "the Lawyer." His sons, Caleb, Joshua, Sylvanus, and Hosea, inherited his mechanical genius and mental ability.

Crossing of the Delaware

December 25th, 1776 Trenton.  In a daring tactic, General Washington in the Dead of Winter decide to attack the town of Trenton.  In the middle of the night and during a snow storm the Patriots crossed the Delaware River and then attacked the Hessian Mercenaries and British Troops occuping the Town.  It was an absolute and complete Victory.

A Little known Hero was Oliver Cromwell.   He enlisted in company commanded by Capt. Lowery, attached to the Second New Jersey Regiment, under the command of Col. Israel Shreve. He was at the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Monmouth, and Yorktown.   Cromwell was brought up a farmer, having served his time with Thomas Hutchins, Esq., his maternal uncle. He was, for six years and nine months, under the immediate command of Washington, whom he loved affectionately. "His discharge "at the close of the war, was in Washington's own hand-writing, of which he was very proud, often speaking of it. He received, annually, ninety-six dollars pension. He lived a long and honorable life.  He lost three sons and three daughters; had fourteen children who reached the age of maturity--seven sons and seven daughters. He saw his grand-children to the third generation. He was a man of strong natural powers--never chewed tobacco nor drank a glass of ardent spirit. He died, in the town of his birth, January 24th, 1853.

There is another little known Hero at the Crossing.  Prince Whipple was a Body Guard to General Whipple of New Hampshire, who was an Aid to General Washington.  In the Engraving done of the Night of December 25th 1776, Prince Whipple can be seen Proudly riding Horseback, next to General Washington and General Whipple.   More Modern Artist's failed to add him to other renditions of that Glorious day.

Prince was beloved by all who knew him. He was the "Caleb Quotem" of Portsmouth, where. he died at the age of thirty-two, leaving a widow and children.

The Spy of Lafayette

One Little known hero is James Armistead Lafayette.   James was a man who Volunteered his service to General Lafayette of the Continential Army.  So impressed with this Man General Lafayette asked  him to be a Spy.   Upon agreeing to this task, he was able to get himself employed by the British General Cornwallis.    Cornwallis was also so impressed  by him that he in turn, asked him to spy for the British Army.  So James Armistead started Feeding the British false information till the Surrender of General Cornwallis.  So perfect was the Acting of James that not until Cornwallis met James in the Headquarters tent of General Lafayette, did his true identity and mission become known to him.   James was so fond of General Lafayette that he took his last name as a sign of his loyalty and appreciation.   The Service provided by James and the success of his mission was immeasurable to the success over Cornwallis.

Americans All..

What some of you may have already figured out is that not only are these American Heros.   But they are American Heros that happen to be African American.   The reason for not including this earlier, is because it matters little what the Color of their skin was.  All that matters is that they are Heros, American Heros that fought for not only Our Liberty and Freedom, but their Liberty and the Freedom of Future Generations.

The Continential Army was so integrated by the end of the Revolutionary War, 1/4th of it was made up of African Americans.   The United States would not see this kind of integration again for another 200 years.

These are not all of the Hero's of the American Revolution, there are many more of many different Races and Sexes.   But the Fact that they Fought and many died for all of us.....is what matters.

They Were...........We Are..............Americans All...\

Sunday, August 24, 2008

I Found out that the Congressional Ban on Drilling is Renewed every year.   This Year Long Ban ends September 30th, 2008.

I originaly wrote  Blog condeming the Democrats Strategy of ignoring the Vote on the Floor for ending the Ban now.   I said that the Democrats were just waiting for the Sept 30th to roll around knowing that under these Conditions that it would not be renewed for another year.  Then they could just say to their Base, it wasn't them, they didn't vote for it...they were forced to let the ban end by Oil Loving Politicians.   Then after it lowered the Prices more...they would claim Credit..for doing nothing.

But then I realized, the Republicans are playing a little Political game as well.  They know that the Ban ends September 30th.  And that it probably won't have enough votes to renew the Ban.  But yet they still made a "show" recently of staying at Congress Protesting the lack of an up or down vote by the Democrats.  So they use it as an example that the Democrats don't care about you..... When in reality neither side cares ....they just insult or lack of Knowledge and figure we are too dumb to know the facts, all they had to do was wait till the end of September.   So far only one Republican Politician has mentioned this to my knowledge.

So Both Parties are using this to their best advantage.  I personally don't see why we shouldn't end the ban now.  But to be fair....  it's all polotics.    Sad that the representatives of the People are too busy playing games....to do the work of the People.

When will we elect adults to Congress.........instead of Politicians.......

Russia says it has fulfilled a pledge to withdraw its combat troops from Georgia in line with a ceasefire deal.

The defence ministry said only soldiers manning pre-existing peacekeeping checkpoints remained in Georgia proper.

However, a Russian general said earlier that 2,000 troops would be stationed in "buffer zones" around the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

US President George Bush and his French counterpart said Russia had failed to meet the terms of the ceasefire pact.

Mr Bush and Nicolas Sarkozy agreed in a telephone call that "Russia is not in compliance and that Russia needs to come into compliance now", a White House spokesman said.

"[Russians] have without a doubt failed to live up to their obligations. Establishing checkpoints, buffer zones are definitely not part of the agreement," US officials said.

The "buffer zones" extend far beyond any pre-existing security zones, and the BBC's diplomatic correspondent, Jonathan Marcus, says Western diplomats fear that Moscow is determined to define the parameters of the interim security arrangements in its own terms.

Our correspondent says that part of the problem is the extraordinary vagueness of the EU-brokered ceasefire deal, which speaks only of "additional security measures" in "the immediate proximity of South Ossetia" - proximity being defined as a distance of "several kilometres".

Georgia has said it will not accept any "annexation" of its land by Russia.

"But war, in a good cause, is not the greatest evil which a nation can suffer. War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people. A war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice – a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their free choice – is often the means of their regeneration. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other." - John Stuart Mill
