The sound you don't and won't hear tonight,  is the phone at the Memphis Grizzlies ticket office ringing off the hook, as once again, the Grizz got stiffed by Lady Luck in the NBA Draft Lottery.

A year ago the Grizz, who had the best chance of landing the top pick, dropped to the 4th pick.

This year, the Grizz didn't have the best chance of winning the #1 pick, and they didn't. They'll pick 5th in the June 26th Draft, and now the question is-

What now?

Nbadraft.net projects Arizona shooting guard Jerryd Bayless to be the 5th player selected, but there is no way he'll be wearing Beale Street Blue in 2008.

Maybe they'll go after Stanford center Brook Lopez, but will drafting Lopez make you want to hand a chunk of your hard earned cash for season tickets?

I didn't think so....

So like I said, what now? Any ideas?

Lopez, hmmm. Frankly, I think I'd take Robin Lopez before I selected Brook. And I say this for Chemistry reasons, and Robin has a more NBA style game to me. To me.

Along with Jerryd Bayless, my other Top 5 can't go wrong as Griz picks are:

Roy Hibbert-Georgetown
OJ Mayo-USC
Joe Alexander-West Virginia

Roy Hibbert?

I'm a Georgetown fan, and I don't see that pick at all-- especially at #5. If he's there at 28 fine, but 5? No way.

I do like Alexander from WVU, but not at 5, and there's no way he'll be there at #28.

I could live with Mayo, and I'm terrified of getting Anthony Randolph from LSU. Didn't the Grizz already try drafting an athletic, 6-11 jumping jack from LSU once? That one didn't work out too well from what I remember....

The #5 & #28 spot are good spots for the Griz. After a couple of decades looking at the NBA draft. I'm suspicious of the "best player available" theory. I like the "heart of a winner", "eye of the tiger" theory of drafting. Some of those "best" players often times wind up being big time busts & big time busters. Though nobody has a crystal ball, but competitors and guys who don't like losing cut it in the NBA in the long run. It's my Larry Bird, Manu Ginobli theory.

I say that to say this. Alot of them early-leaving, money chasing underclassmen are chasing bucks & lead me to believe that they won't be around 5 seasons. Take the money & run. . .I understand why they aredoing it, but if I was a franchise owner, I'd be on some psychological s#!t, mind reading and future casting. Every team has a #1 pick (Kwame Brown-Sam Bowie-Danny Ferry) horror story, where the best ain't the best. Caveat Emptor Griz.
