Tiger fans, breathe a sigh of relief!    He's not going to the Bulls, not going to the Knicks, he's not going to run for president; Coach Cal is staying in Memphis to coach the Tigers!   He signed his contract extenstion today which keeps him here until the 2012-2013 season.    He's guaranteed $2.35 million (this is similar to my deal here at Fox13) and will receive a donor-funded longevity bonus of $5 million (we are still working that into my contract here).

I really think this man wants to stay here, of course those numbers would make anyone want to stay anywhere!  haha   But, I do believe he's made a home here and wants to continue to build this program even more.

I like the deal you have at Fox. When my talks at buying the station are complete, we will have to renegotiate your contract.

But seriously though, I think Cal is committed to the program & college basketball. I think his stint in New Jersey (as coach), and Philadelphia (as asst)affected him. In the pros he had to deal with guys, grown men with egos bigger than his. Some of the players have salaries bigger than the coach's. The NBA is about the players and not the coaches. In college basketball coaches have more cache. Also, in the NBA coaches have to deal with the player's union & upper management. All of these things under cut authority & power. I don't think Cal is temperamentally cut out for the pros. He understands that system sure enough, but he also knows that he has it sweet in Memphis.

That dude sure knows how to shake leaves from the money tree. I'm glad he is staying. He is good for Memphis.

Oh.
I forgot to mention, I think Cal wants to be a great coach at a great program and build up a humongo reputation like: Coach K, or Dean Smith, or John Wooden. I mean, really be mentioned in the same breath with some of the greatest who ever done it.

I'm from Missouri, so naturally I cheer for the St. Louis Cardinals. I'm also a Mizzou fan but I went to college at Mississippi State. Yes, I bleed Maroon and White! I love sports and love my job as a sports anchor/reporter. My favorite two athletes of all-time are Michael Jordan and Flo-Jo. I also enjoy eating. I grew up on a beef farm, so I'm very picky about my red meat!
