So Independence Day is the day that our forefathers Declared Independence on our Country. The day they wanted to be remembered forever as a day of Freedom for America. Well Freedom my FOOT!! We are not even allowed the freedom to celebrate on the day of our own countries Independence! My family and I went to Snowden Grove park  (in Southaven BTW) to watch the fireworks show where several other civilians (still in southaven) shot off their own personal fireworks. The show was great, so after we left we went to the fireworks company at Stateline and Getwell (which is still in Southaven)  and bought $200 or so in Fireworks. We went to shoot them at my in-laws, which is in Southaven. We had lit a few smoke bombs and some sparklers for the kids and what do you know... Here comes the Southaven Police around the corner. They took all of our fireworks, and issued a ticket to my father in-law!!! I asked the officers why they where doing this and they replied with ,"It's Illegal!"     It's illegal to celebrate Independence Day??    I asked him why they sold fireworks in Southaven if it was Illegal to shoot them and he told me that they didn't sale them in Southaven.  Even though I had just purchased mine in Southaven.   Why are they not legal in Southaven if they are legal in Horn Lake? There are firework stands along the whole border of Southaven.    Well to conlcude my blog I would like you to read this letter written to Abigail Adams    from her husband on July 2, 1776 as that was the original date the Declaration of Independence was actually signed:

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.

They are legal to be done outside the city limit.
Why?
Because population density and structure (BLDGS) are les commonly placed together.
Why not in the city?
To keep you from accidentaly burning someone es's or your own bldg/house down.
Every year somebody fires them off in the city thinking it's all good and a house gets caught on fire.
Law made to keep that from happening.

They may be illegal for a good reason, but why is it legal in the neighboring cities? I think I was more upset with the way the cops treated us. They took all of our fireworks and gave us a ticket. We didn't know. We had a few people tell us that the cops came and asked them to stop firing in the city limits but didn't take all there fireworks. It was for our kids, 8yr, 7yr and 4yr old, that really wasn't fair to them or the people who spent $ on them. I even told him that I had relatives in the county where we could shoot them off but they weren't having it. Only thing we had lit up were some smoke bombs, one of those spinning things, and a couple of sparklers. Not only did our kids not get to have their fire works but we were out $200+ and a ticket for $300. We were told it was a noise violation, not anything to do with setting buildings on fire (though that is good reason not shoot them around houses), but the ones that they had saw us setting off weren't noisey. They could have easily said,"You know these are illegal in the city limits, can you not shoot them or take them were you can" But they took all of our fireworks and probably shot them off with their own families.

Doesn't matter - you could still burn down someone's property and or hurt another person. What goes up must come down remember that. And then there is the noise problem - some people just don't like the noise and their rights are just as important as yours. Actually the fireworks stand you are referring to in Southaven is just across the city limits.

I had to stay up till 1 am and called the police because my neighbors were not considerate with their celebrations. Their fireworks kept landing on my property including my roof. Had one spark ignighted, up my >150 yr old house would have gone in a flash. I had my cell phone and water hose at the ready.

Actually that area used to be Desoto County but it was annexed by Southaven last year. Well we didn't shoot any and we are out a few hundred dollars. I guess someone is safer somehow. Though it still doesn't dispute the fact that the police could have let us take them to the county lines. We weren't hurting anyone, and we didn't get rude with the cops or anything. We were very apologetic and humble with them. Mostly for the kids though. Its not like we were drinking and being belligerent or anything. As far as not setting homes on fire, I agree, we probably shouldn't have been shooting them where we were. But I still believe those 2 cops were scoring free fireworks. We didn't see any other cops out taking peoples fireworks. Though we did see the same cops somewhere else taking other peoples fireworks. Plus their trunk was loaded down. And if they weren't scoring free fireworks then they were having a bad night and needed someone to take it out on.
