Ok here we go again with another child killed by pit bulls. I know alot of you are avid pit bull fans, personally I don't trust them. But I am an animal lover, I have a German shephard. Awhile back Ernie touched on the topic of requiring dangerous animals such as pits, rottweilers, and German shephards being registered. I'm thinking that we may need to register adults. Why were these dogs not properly restrained? If you want to keep pits or any other large breed dog, try ensuring that they can not get out. It's called being a responsible owner!

And now for the parents, where were they? A seven year old does not need to be out and about alone! With the perverts, and killers that are running our streets today you would think that the parents would be keeping an eye on their kids!

It all boils down to lazieness we can't be bothered with actually having to raise our own children or tend to our animals, which have become nothing more than a status symbol. And who pays for our lazieness? Our children! So come on America get off your A@# and do the right thing!

I do agree with you Fly. I believe that it all boils down to owner responsibility. I lost my beloved rottie a couple of weeks ago. He was the sweetest, most well-behaved dog a person could have asked for. The thing is - hubby and I took the time to have our dog properly trained from the time he was a puppy. Then we took the extra precautions of fencing and containing him to our property. And we treated him like one of our children but letting him know that we were the "big dogs." Not to mention insurance. Do I have a problem with registering a dog like him? Absolutely not because he was a very large, very protective animal. He never attacked anyone but there is no doubt in my mind that if he had seen one of my children or us being threatened he would have. There are two sides to these stories but it always seems to come back to one thing. Lack of responsible ownership of the pet.

That being said there are some dogs that have nervous dispositions which make them more likely to bite or become aggressive as they age. A chow comes to mind. And a chiuahuah (spelling?).

sian, you are right about that chiua--however you do spell that thing. One of our friends had one that chewed the skin off my husband's ankle every time we went over. They never put that dog up or offered to pay the doctor bills. We didn't go after the second time. When they called, we told them sorry, your dog is too expensive for us.
One of my class mates had a chow and it literally chewed her arm to the bone. She had years of physical therapy and skin grafts. She is a beautician and had to get disability for those lost years.
Another friend had pits. They attacked and killed his grandmother and chewed her to pieces before he could kill them. She was dismembered. He is a cop. He had them contained. She had gone in to feed them. Unfortunately, she turned out to be their food. They had NEVER shown any aggression before. He had had them for years. They were used to her feeding them. Something just snapped.
We've got a big dog--94# of Irish Setter. They are not known to be agressive at all. But this one sounds very ferocious when anyone comes to the door. And if someone were to try to hurt me, I wouldn't put it past him to at least knock that person down. He usually tucks tail and runs, if the truth be told. But he stays inside and folks coming to the door don't know that. I do put him up before I let a stranger to him in.

Those little chihuahuas (again, spelling?) still make me nervous irish, lololol.

Sorry about your rottie Sian.
The thing of it is, is no matter how loving a dog is it is still an animal with animal instincts. Like I said I have a German shephard, which is the only type of dog that I have ever owned (except for my wifes miniture dachsund). And I think they are great dogs but once when I was about 10 I was about to get my butt wipped for something I had done (I deserved the wipping) but my dads shephard saw him lift his hand at me and attacked him. She never bit him just kind of tackled him and showed them teeth to let him know that she wasn't going to let that happen. Therefor I never let my dog roam the yard or be alone with my son or any child at any time. I just don't know what she will recognize as a threat. And yes I did end up getting that wipping after the dog was put up.
